thinking i have to start constructing a coolerdor and...

Cooolidors are great! I had two Coolidors but had to upgrade to a wine cooler because of the crazy Tucson summer heat.

Nice link, HighPSI! Thanks.

If anyone is interested I might want to do a split. A sheet is 86 bucks and will be more then i need. PM me if anyone is interested.

motion, id be interested but wouldnt be for a couple weeks when i have time to tackle this project and see how much i need...

does anyone know if its safe to assume this is kiln dried or not?

i know nothing about wood, what does paperbacked and bubble free mean? i assume 10 mil and 22 mil is the thickness?

Any info would be helpful as I too don't know much about wood panels but would like to build a coolerdor in the near future.

that's probably mils, not MM. theres a difference. mils is how films are measured (I don't know the US equivalent of 1 mil off hand, but they are smaller than a MM), but 1MM would be .03935"

IE - 10 MM would be .3935" (or just under 1/2 inch) & 22.5 MM would be .8854" (or slightly larger than 3/4 inch)

the bubble free/paperbacked refers to the backing of the veneer. this can help hold the veneer together in extremely thin applications, but more commonly it is meant to isolate the wood of the veneer from the adhesive used to apply the veneer to the substrate. check it out here...

thanks cat, so it seems from your info that you would be of the opinion that the 10mil would be better to go with for the purposes of lining the coolerdor (3/4 seems to thick?) also, what would you recemmond for affixing it to the walls, just a light glue from a glue gun? they have an adhesive backing but i dont think its available with the spanish cedar...

one more q, is $86 for a 4x8 ft sheet seem fair to you, high, low? im thinking it might almost make the coolerdor cost prohibitive as its supposed to be a cheap solution

I think you are still confusing mils and milimeters. I don't know off the top of my head how thick 10 mils would be, but I would guess somewhere in the neighborhood of .020" - .030" or twenty to thirty thousandths of an inch (as a reference, .125" or one-hundred twenty-five thousandths is 1/8"). from what I gather on the website you've linked to, the 'mils' measurements are refering solely to the thickness of the backing material. the thickness of the wood is probably somewhere in the neighborhood of 1/16" to 1/8".

veneers are very thin sheets or strips of wood (or porcelain in the case of teeth) that are meant to be applied to a thicker material. their purpose is to give the appearance and finish of much more expensive woods without the cost of using solid materials.

a good example of this is the cheap assembly required furniture at Wal-Mart or any other department store. It's base construction is of pine, ash, partical board, or some other reasonably cheap (usually softer) wood. It then has a very thin hardwood veneer applied over it that will have a more attractive grain and can be finished to look better.

In short, both the 10 and 22.2 mil veneers are going to be nearly identical in thickness. Most likely only about .030" difference overall.

I hope this helps. If not, let me know and I'll pm my digits and I might be able to better explain it over the phone.

Best of luck!

A mil is equal to one thousandth of an inch (0.0254 millimeter.

22 mils = .022 inches - less than 1/32"

For reference, the typical trash bag is less than 2 mils.

IMHO this would not be of any use in lining a coolador.

Just my .02

ok....umm alright, 2 + 2 equals.... ughhhhh ok wait, wait... ok I see hmmm, ya trash bags, i have one of those....

Here is a link where you can buy by the square foot. scroll down to Spanish cedar. 1/8th and 1/4 inch thick are $4.10 a square foot. If you go to the main page at woodnshop.com you can buy by the lineal foot at precut sizes. http://www.woodnshop.com/EXOTIC_LBL_LST.htm

This is for solid Spanish Cedar, they also have veneers as well. I would go with solid wood as it isn't constructed with glues etc.

Once i get my workshop together im goign to build a humidor so this thread may come in handy.

I kept 4 coolers at one time - never lined them with anything -
Cigars were kept in boxes & it worked fine.
Coolers hold RH well so I wouldn't worry about lining it!

What did you do about temperature control? Living in Texas, we do periodically have issues with heat, and no amount of air conditioning is going to matter much sometimes. I guess a sealed tupperware box with ice, then stuck into a ziploc might work. Maybe I'll invest in a Colemandor and give this a shot.
