two questions...

I actually have two questions

1) I hear talk about scotch, brandy, and bourbon as a complament to cigars. I, however, am a huge fan of rum. Is there any specific rum that would be good with a cigar (or vice versa; any cigar that would be good with rum). I know that this mostly hinges on your taste in cigars. I, personally, like a medium to full bodied cigar with a sweet and nutty hint to it.

and for my second question...

2) What type of wood are cigar boxes madder from? Is it Spanish cedar or does it depend on the brand?

Rum is a great compliment to cigars and there are a multitude of ones that will go good with cigars. I like Myers dark rum and Black Seal dark. Great on the rocks. I'm sure that some of our other residend experts can comment on Rum.

Second, the type of wood is spanish cedar for all boxes. I do not know of any other wood that would be used and which cigar maker would use it. The other thing that cigar boxes are made from is cardboard.

You'll find quite a few rum afficianados here (and check out the Spiritus Fermenti forum as well - alot of good info there).

Personally, my absolute favorite rum is Ron del Barrilito (both 2 and 3 star are quite good). I like it over 1 or 2 ice cubes and find it complements most cigars quite well. Another rum that I particularly like is Appleton Estate V/X Jamaica Rum. This rum has a little more bite to it and some stronger, less balanced flavors which I think overpower medium cigars, so if I drink this, I'll smoke a more full cigar - love it with most of the Camacho line.

I'm sure you'll get quite a few opinions here! But, don't forget to check out the other two forums under the Finer Things category: Spiritus Fermenti and Coffee & Tea - we'd love some more action over there. To find them, go to the main Amback Forum list and scroll down towards the bottom.

I bought a couple of bottles of the Appleton, as well as a couple of bottles of Coruba dark rum, and a bottle of "white" or "overproof" rum while I was in Jamaica last summer. The Jamaicans will tell you that the Appleton's is supposed to be the prestige rum, but many of them drink the Coruba (Except when they seriously want to get sloshed, then they reach for the 126 proof white rum). The Coruba is sweet and rich, I think it goes very well with a dark cigar. Then again sometimes my friends refer to me as the "fruity drinks guy." Whatever, I think it's delicious!
