Unusual Cigar Shape Lighting

On a cigar like a La Aurora Preferido or Hemingway Perfecto, what would be the best way to light it? Would you cut the foot off first or just light it? Would it even burn if you didn't? And just theoretically here, what about a Drew Estate Egg--I've just always been curious about that one?

Usually with the Hemingway I just lightly torch the foot trying to avoid turning it into a candle, and if properly humidified it should create an even burn by the time it gets to the bulge. Those first few pulls can be a struggle sometimes. However, if I notice a tight draw after clipping the head, I then clip the foot as well which almost always improves the draw. Clipping the foot doesn't have a negative effect on the cigar. I think it's just a matter of personal preference. The only thing that may happen is if it wasn't going to be smoked right away, the wrapper might begin to unravel.

i agree, ive never had a problem lighting a hemmingway...solid construction -- its built to be light as is im sure...
i wanna get ahold of one of those la auroras -- they look goooood

Funny a small group of cigars smoker gathered Thursday night for a cigar dinner. (it was a close firends B'day)
On of my friends ahd a Salamone I had gifted him a year earlier at his B'day.
A salomone is a large figarado with the type of tip that is a long point.
At first it started to burn uneven and he asked this very question!

"Everyone said pretty much the same thing!"
When they went to light the cigar everyone used the flame of their lighter to heat the entire tip.
Roasting the tip completly around the tip.
It seems to help with an even burn!

I smoked an Egg last month. It was very interesting, but a letdown.

There definately were some issues with lighting & the draw. After it burned about 1/4th of the way I knocked the ash off and it got a lot better. It also was not a very even burn.

I'm pretty sure you are supposed to sit on them & eventually a real cigar will hatch!

Oh my god that is the funniest thing I have read in a long time.

As for lighting a perfecto I typically find the smaller foot and tip makes it easier to light quickly and if maintained properly burns better then most parejos (regular shaped cigars)

That's all pretty much what I figured. I did buy a short story to try it on today as the last and only other Hemingway I had I cut. I wouldn't even try it as I firmly believe all non commisioned Drew Estate cigars are crap but I did see a Natural culebra which I thought was kind of interesting.

its funny that this thread just came up...
i had a signiture at the bar tonight. after the initial cut, i felt it was pulling a little tight. chopped the foot, and it was smooth sailing!

I have seen some people cut the foot, but I havent had to.

I love the Davidoff Short Perfecto, and it has a very narrow foot. It usually draws tight for the first few puffs, but then opens up very nicely and (most of the time) evenly.

My personal pref: Even with Best Sellers and Short Stories I would give them a chance to open on their own before considering giving them a cut. Its like getting cheers from the crowd when the draw opens up and the smoke starts pouring from both ends. 8)

Being a (not so) proud owner of three eggs, I can tell you this. They are a GREAT conversation piece, but when it comes to smoking them, they are a different piece. The taste and aroma aren't bad, but the burn is very uneven. But how do you expect to have even filler tobacco on something of that shape? I still have two left, and I plan to keep it that way. BUt that is just my $.02. Ryan

According to Johnathan Drew, it is a "pungent" smoke that lasts for 2 hours. But Jihiggs, I think I would agree with you. After smoking the one, I would find it almost impossible to smoke the whole thing. And let me tell ya, I looked real "funny" with it.......
