Vinyl vs. CD?

Music! Music! Music!

I've been buying more vinyl lately (just purchased a Lenny Bruce LP.) And, this got me thinking: are there other crazy folks like me?

I *HEART* Vinyl! I have a decent collection that's growing more and more. I got a nice quality turn table four years ago so I now feel comfortable playing the LPs on a regular basis.

The sound quality is soooo much better that the junk kids listen to, today.

Your thoughts?

I like the sond of vinyl much better, but the damn things skip in the car. Some of my buddies who DJ only use vinyl. I love that sound. Its so warm.

i only have a small amount of vinyl.

and no, they arent pants.

i have pink floyd the wall (twice actually)
and then a hand full of 45s
Fool iin the rain from led zeppelin
(im in love with her) and i feel fine by the beatles
and i want to hold your hand also by the beatles.

thats about it. all of them are original releases. i like the led zeppelin one the most. the "b" side is a little song called "hot dog"

i think vinyl has more soul.

Vinyl definitely has a different sound quality, though how noticeable really depends on what you're listening to. I don't own any vinyl and I don't use my CDs anymore - all my music is MP3. But, every now and then, I wish I still had my turntable and some of the albums.

I've got over a thousand LP's out in my garage. They've been there for about ten-15 years. For my birthday last month my wife got me a USB turntable that connects directly to my PC. Now I'm in the long, slow process of finding the best quality and rarest records in the bunch to convert to digital files for CD's or MP3. I guess it will give me something to do...

Sweet! Yet another reason I wish I had kept my albums. If you're grabbing the vinyl over USB, do you use a higher encoding to keep more of the sound quality? Do you notice a difference between MP3s from a CD versus a LP?

You young whippersnappers - I am still using wax cylinders.......

I, too, am working on converting LPs to CDs (with a free-standing burner, not a PC.)

That's a really good question. I wonder. . .

SpecialEd, have you made CDs and MP3s, yet?

my father in law has a bunch of tapes he wants to put on to CD.

What kind of equipment does he have to get to do this? can anybody link me to a site or tell me where i can buy this equipment?

I'm just getting setup (had to make some room near the PC) so I haven't really done any samples yet. I'll keep you posted down the line.

I somewhere have software to accomplish this and also clean up much of the sound. My father went to high school with someone who developed the software that they now use at the Thomas A Edison Museum here in Jersey to convert everything from vinyl to digital. It does require more than just a USB turntable i'm sure, but if anyone is interested I'll see if I can dig it up...I haven't see it in years.....

The next thing you will want to do is buy that AOpen motherboard with the tube amplifier built in - it gives a much more natural sound than most of the digital amps that most computers have.

Have fun with your conversions.

For me a lot of the real character of music comes from the equipment used to record it not the medium used to play it. I definitely appreciate those bands that utilize unique recording techniques and equipment over the pro-tools dependent crowd, nice clean sound in music is ok with some genres, metal mostly but it can sound pretty sterile in the wrong hands.

Anybody here ever hear of Boards of Canada? A Scottish duo that make these incredibly lush soundscapes, pieces of music that sound like futuristic-retro if that makes any sense. Not many people know what they use for recording equipment as the band is pretty secretive about their studio but somehow they have a sound totally unique to them. Good stuff I tell ya.

I love music.
