World Market Rant

I'm not sure how far this chain extends but I was so dumbfounded by what happened to me today I had to share it.

Anyways, I went to World Market (essentially a Pier One with alcohol, coffee, and food) today and while I was there picked out a bottle of Merlot and an Ale. I had wanted to steam the lables off, blow them up, and use them as artwork in my smoking room.

So I went to the cashier to pay and handed her my ID when she asked. She took a few minutes to look at it and told me she couldn't sell me the alcohol. I showed her on the ID where it had my birthday and where it said "Under 21 Until 10-22-06" and told her today's date. She then left and showed the ID to another cashier who said because it wasn't a vertical ID they couldn't sell me the alcohol. Shocked, I told her I'd never heard of such a policy before and just bought the other item I had.

I should have talked to the manager to explain the situation and how poorly they're training their cashiers, but since they can legally refuse sale to anyone and I was dumbfounded I left.

But the whole idea that they would refuse sale to somebody without the new DL which only recently came out is just ludicrous. Especially since the DL they refered to is issued to people UNDER 21 as shown here:

Even if I went out today and renewed my license, it would still be of a horizontal design.

I know its over and done with, and I don't really care about the alcohol as I don't even drink wine and the ale was just a novelty bottle. Just the same, the fact that a store with a liquor license that has assumably been lectured in laws pertaining to alcohol sales, could train its cashiers on the subject so poorly, just really irks me.

Stores can get so weird about alcohol sales. One of my buddies turned 21 last month and we all went to a bar I had been to many times. They refused to serve him because it was midnight of his birthday. They would not serve him until 9am of the buisness day that was his birthday (not that they would even have been open till 12). Everyone I know has gone out at midnight on their birthday to celebrate the big 21. Its ridiculous when retailers/bars decide to take the laws to a whole new level.

I think they refused you because you're ugly...not because of you're age.

:D :D :D

 Sounds like a voice of experience. I didn't think we looked that similar.

You need to do what I did a few weeks ago.

TURN 50!!!

When I was in PA last July, I went into Walmart to purchase 2 gallons of Tiki light fuel, some flints for my Zippo, and some butane for the Zippo. My business partner was with me, since we were holding one of our national paintball camps at Skirmish in Jim Thorpe.

The BRILLIANT Walmart employee would NOT sell me the butane liquid fuel, without my i.d.
I am 39! My partner is 55! They sold us TWO FREAKING GALLONS of extremely flamable liquid AND the Zippo flints, but refused to sell the butane, even after calling the store manager over to the register! They were afraid we weren't over 18 and would use the butane to smoke! LOL IDIOTS!

that is the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard

There's some gas stations in Massachusetts that refuse my ID for cigarettes. They don't acept military ID's. So I of course refuse to show them my state issued ID and demand that they accept a military ID. This usually ends up with me leaving the store and going somewheres else.
