Well we finally got power. I am glad last Thursday my wife thought of the 1/4 cow we have in the freezer. We went to Sears right after work and bought a generator. Friday I could not get to work as to many big trees were across the road plus all the power lines. I was glad my work had not power so I didn't have to take a vaction day. We also were able to stay warm becuase we have a wood burning stove. Now that we have power I lent my generator to a friend because he will not have power untill Sat-Sun.

Cheers
Martin

Glad to hear you came through okay. What kind of generator did you get?

How loud was it and if you don"t mind me asking, how much was it?

I have been looking at the Honda EU2000i - it only puts out 2000w but it is very quiet. Runs about $1k. Trying to decide if it is worth getting something that quiet at the expense of more wattage

Glad to hear y'all got your power back brother!

I think it is about 75 d. It is loud. I paid $700. The hondas are nice for the same watts it would be about $1400-$1500. I would not get a 3000 watt, I would get more. There are reference on the web to tell you the draw of each item. I would add up what you wnat on the generator the pick the watts from there. A 5k or 5600 is just about right for a fridge, freezer a couple lights, wood stove fan, lizard heat light, microwave.

Just remember don't run the power in the wall to charge the whole house. It will go back down the line and can fry an electrical worker.

When I get a generator, I'm going to have an electrician install a cutover switch so I can switch of the grid and then plug the generator into the house so I don't have to have extension cords running everywhere.

Good call on the web references - I'll have to calculate what I'll really need if I want more than just the basics.

Yup I plan on getting a Gentran this summer also. The sucky thing is my panel is in the bed room and I am not sure what to do. Guess I will just have to get an electrician and find out if I can put it in another place.

Thanks All.
