Starting tomorrow, my town will be taken over by wine-loving lunatics for a three day party. It's a hot air balloon and wine festival held by the local wineries to show off their goods. The population of my town will go from approx. 81k to nearly 150k. The festival is held on campgrounds to accomodate the crowd, and the price of gas goes up 20-30 cents.
The live music usually consists of bands who have not had a hit record in years (last year it was Survivor, this year Eddie Money, along with maybe 10 others), basically music that can only be enjoyed while consuming huge amounts of wine.
I've gone twice but no more. It reminds me of being back at Woodstock '99, just without the good music. I rather go to the wineries and not have to wait on a huge line to try their varietals, or have someone bump into me when I'm smoking a cigar.
The wineries make a killing during the festival and their prices reflect this...being 1 1/2 hrs away from Hollywood doesn't help either. Luckily I've been here long enough to get to know some of the owners.
