humidor

I bought a humidor from cheaphumidors.com and the construction is fine I seasoned it per instructions and the hygrometer reads an even 70% but it seems dry to me I have kept a couple of singles in it and they seem to dry out fast is it me or the humidor?
I am expecting a box of cigars soon and want to store them in it
but I dont want them ruined any ideas or suggestions?

Is it a digital hygrometer? because if it isn't, you need to throw it out and get a digital one. Then, salt test it to make sure it is reading properly. Only then can you be sure that the reading is correct. Those analog hygrometers that come with humidors aren't worth anything at all. I bet that is your problem.

I had the same problem with my first humidor.
the more cigars you have in a humidor the better it will keep humidity.

the only way to keep a humidor up to RH (if your humi is empty) is to:
A) use active humidity controll (cigar oasis)

B) Use a lot of Heartfelt humidity regulating beads
or
C) both of the above.

i wouldnt sweat it too much. Dont get worried until you have the box of cigars in there and it still wont hold RH at all. If that happens post back on this thread and im sure all the guys here will be glad to trouble shoot for you.

with that said, you should salt test you hygrometer. maybe that is the problem. All in all a good old salt test never hurt anyone. I salt test my dial every 3 months.
I will also reccomend a digital hygrometer. I find that i can trust those more. Even though a digital is better it still needs to be salt tested. there is a chance that they are off a little. If a digital hygrometer is off it will be always off by the same amount. the old dial style hygros are prone to new and different innaccuracies every time you bump into it or move it.

good luck! we're rootin for ya!!

I would alsoi make sure the humi is sealed well. My big one had a draft when I bought it. A few packs of d ring seal and its tight as a drum.

What exactly is D-ring seal? I'm planning to hook up a coolerdor. I've got a nice big cooler, but it doesn't seal the greatest.

IT can be found in the weatherstripping section of your hardware store. It's cross section is the shape of a D.

Duct tape around the edge of the cooler. All the way around and both sides. It will seal up almost water tight. I did it for mine. I wouldn't have it any other way.
