Actually, of the five or so people left in the stadium at this point, I do like port, or should I say, I did like port. I've been through many different phases with regard to beer, wine, spirits in my life, including a recent five year period where my body just plain rejected beer. I honestly couldn't drink it, bad reactions.
But to the subject of port wine, I always enjoyed the rich, full bodied nature of a port wine, and for a brief period in the 80's entertained myself with the fairly big named $15-20 bottles, run of the mill fare at the local liquor store. Along came the 90's and a friend of mine started getting in to some really fine ports. I wish I could remember the names of them all, but I got to try some pretty fantastic ports with him over a period of a couple years. Warre's was one, but there were many others. He goes through periods where he latches on to something, learns everything about it really quickly, and then schmoozes people and spends big money, at least what's big for his budget, and tries all the stuff that's considered good in a realm. Again, it has to do with what he can afford, no $500-1,000 bottles of anything for him. But he will stretch if he gets a tip on something fantastic. I'll see if I can engage him in a conversation to find out what some of those great ports were. My body doesn't deal with wine well either, and I never did get to being a wine drinker, but those port days were delicious.
