Spring and Summer means Gin

Good evening, Bloof. I was just perusing your top 25 list again and my ever-inquisitive mind began to wonder about some bourbons not on your list.

I assume their absence means you've tried 'em and they didn't rate a place on that list. Just out of curiosity, though, I'll mention 'em and you can tell me if they just didn't make the list.

Basil Hayden's. Blanton's. Classic Cask 15 year. Eagle Rare 10 year. Eagle rare 17 year. Black Maple Hill. Elijah Craig.

I haven't tried 'em but I probably will over time. I'm just curious as to your perception of them.

Basil Hayden's - I love it. One of the most uniquely flavored bourbons I've ever tasted, but it's monotonous and weak on the down side. It's only 80 proof, and after 83 bourbons, there's no way it could stand up to the competition. I don't assign places to bourbons that have lost the battle to remain in my Top 25, but it's probably still around No. 30-35. Basil Hayden's is great stuff, but at 80 proof it's hard to justify buying it at the price that's usually charged.

Blanton's - I don't like it. I've tried quite a bit of Blanton's over the years. I don't like it.

Classic Cask 15 - After the short lived 20 year old dropped out of the market, quality declined with every subsequent release. The 18 was beautiful, but at times suspiciously bland compared to the 20. The 17 tasted almost watered down, although it had flavors reminiscent of the 18 and 20. So, when the 15 came out at the same price I paid for the 17, which was the same price I paid for the 18, and almost the same price that I paid for the 20, why bother?

Eagle Rare 10 - Nice stuff, but I like more than a hint of clover honey on the palate in my bourbons.

Eagle Rare 17 - Same as the 10, although I hear the 2006 release is a different animal. They're going to have to get a different hunter to come in, shoot the bottle, taste it, and find out whether or not that's true. I don't generally like single barrel bourbons, and the 10 and only bottle of the 17 I had years ago, ultimately disappointed me. Why did I only try one bottle of the 17? Because it tasted so much like the 10, I knew what the "signature" was, and didn't want to see it again.

Black Maple Hill - You didn't say which one, and also note they have rye as well. I tried their 14 and 16 year bourbons and also the 18 year old rye a while back. They all are overpriced, and have the flavor of mushrooms and potting soil in them. A friend who is my guide in the Wonderful World of Whiskey told me it seemed from what he heard they sounded like "overpriced cult whiskey." Tastes that way to me too. I have better things to do with my money at their prices.

Elijah Craig - Again, you didn't say which one. Short and sweet. I hate the 18, and I've had plenty. So do lots of other bourbon drinkers I know. I love the 12. So do lots of other bourbon drinkers I know.

Ya know, I've heard the old saying "that was before my time" but in this case, Military Special must have been AFTER my time - - - I've never heard of it.

I somehow detect the inference that it ranked very low on the taste and/or quality scale but very high on the 'cheapness' scale. Am I right?

Something sorta in the same category as "MD 20/20" or "Sweet Lucy" at about 69 cents a gallon. Real quality stuff.

Military Special was much better than MD 10/20 or even Wild Irish Rose. It came in a PLASTIC bottle so you wouldn't have to worry about it breaking if you accidentally dropped it!

Didn't you mean if you accendently tripped over your own feet after you had been consuming some, And landed on the half filled bottle, ?

Gin, thats the stuff I clean my trifocals with , smells like a pine tree, cleans glass well ! hahahaha

Good Lord I'm glad that I missed out on a lot of the low quality stuff while I was in the Navy. I usually stuck with pints of Guinness, red wine, and Scotch. But then I didn't get completely wasted very often either. Guess it takes all kinds.

I've only had gin twice. Once was a gin and tonic with a twist of lime - not bad, but I was 16. Then I tried it neat. I though I was drinking water left over from the water pan of a Christmas tree.

Sam what did you doi in the Navy, I am retired , I was a cook.

I was an intelligence specialist. I got out a few years ago, and am thinking about going back in as a reservist.

aHHHH yes the old oxy moron, millitary intelligence......... hahahaha sorry but I just had to say that !!!

Vince: It really is an oxy moron. The more you get to know the guys you work with, the more you worry.
VaGentleman: So they say... The problem is finding someone that you trust enough to drink what they make. If they drink what they make, then its probably safe to drink.
Not that I know who "they" are though.

Okay, although I am definitely the "King of Digression", I just wanted to step in and ask everyone to keep it to the topic of Gin ( I have a bottle of Bombay Sapphire in the fridge, BTW - so I am actually part of this thread now). I think alot of folks are clicking on this topic looking to discuss Gin and are giving up on it.

Thanks. 8)

I gave up on Gin a long time ago

So did I, had a bad experince when I was 16  I have had trouble with even the smell since, that was tough when I was a bartender when I was younger.

Now I myself love gin!

Mrs. Daddy agress with the pine needles thing, but boy...a tall, cool Gin and Tonic with a wedge of lime on a hot day....wooo weee
AND, REAL Martinis are indeed made with gin, I don't care what Mr. James Bond orders....he's a fictional character!

I'll still drink Tanquery, and I like Bombay products, and a fan of Boodle's too!! There ya go Kev!

Spoken like a true Jersey guy, Rob - you never disappoint.

I am heading on a cruise in a week and will be spending a little bit of time drinking martinis. I normally drink Bombay Sapphire - any other recommends out there?
