Somewhere down in Texas
As many of you know, I have just taken the civil service test for Killeen, Texas, to qualify for a fire fighter position. As I posted in an other thread, I passed the test.

This test was really critical for me to pass because I am 34 years old. The Civil Service has an employment age cut-off at 36, which means i have to be hired before my 36th birthday. The test is only given in Killeen once a year so if I would have failed this one, I would be 35 about to turn 36 when I took it again. Yes there are other municipalities around me that are both civil service and non-civil service. Killeen is my hometown and I really want to work there.

I am also about 75 days from gaining my fire certification. I obtained my EMT-B about three years ago. By the time Killeen actually starts hiring from the list of this test, I will be fire certified and will have preference over those that have no certs.

I took the test on Tuesday but the grades and list position was not available until yesterday afternoon. I was always a C-D student in school and did not finish college. Studying has always been difficult for me. I now have a 14 month old son and work from 7:30 am to 5pm. 6 days a week and am doing my fire academy on-line at night. I have a pretty full schedule BUT DID MANAGE TO STUDY FOR THIS TEST. The best I could imagine I scored was 70%-80%. I was real skeptical on getting anything much over 75%.

I called city hall yesterday afternoon and found my results. 138 took the test. 78 passed. I scored 89% which put me in the 10th spot on the hire list! The top 8%!!!! I have never been in the top 10% of anything in my life!!!! EVER!!!!

Killeen is growing fast and is at a current population of about 125,000. They are building 3 new stations to add to the 7 already existing. The employement opportunities are there. Killeen FD is a big department.

My delima is this: I resign from my current employment of 16 years to go to my skills camp in November. Assuming Killeen starts hiring in January, I will be unemployed for a couple of months to a year when they exhaust their hire list. The good news is that by placing myself at the top of the list and having EMT-B and Fire certs., at the most I will be without a job is 45-60 days! Well, its really not a delima! Duck has offered to pay me for my work in the boot shop, so i won't really be unemployed until Killeen calls. This would be good for me to be in the boot shop full time for a couple of months. It will help me sharpen my skills. I will be working there when I get this fire gig anyway. Also, Killeen will send me to Paramedic school which was ultimately my goal all along anyway!

Man, things have really started happening fast. It really exciting for my family and myself. Its scary at the same time. I generally don't like change. Did I mention that I have been at my current job for 16 years? LOL

Thanks for reading, fellas! I am very pleased with my test and just wanted to share with everyone.

Congrats bro! I hope you had a nice smoke after finding that out. I hope you really enjoy your new career and advance quickly through the ranks.

Congrats, blind squirrel! :D In all seriousness though, it's great to see when hard work pays off. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

Go for what makes you happy. It may be tough for a little while but you will liver longer, happier and healthier!

Thanks SpecialEd, and thats the thing about it, I'm coming home miserable at night and i absolutely hate getting up for work in the mornings. My wife hates seeing me that way. We will be taking a substantial pay cut initially, but after I have been with the department a few years, I will be back to my current pay. AND this department is 24 hours on, 48 hours off! So i'll only be working a third of the year. The other two thirds I will be building the boots.

There is nothing like a qualification test to stimulate one's ability to study and apply one's self.
Public school never provided that kind of attitude.

Geoff
Who missed only one question on his last qualification test, much to the astonishment of everyone who knows me.

I am really happy for you, Dustin. I know it's tough sometimes taking the pay cut - but you will appreciate the quality of life. Starting up the firm years ago for us was a tough challenge - but Sunday nights I am looking forward to heading into the office.

Nice job my friend!

Way to go DL! Its good to hear it is all working out for you. I know you put forth a ton of effort and it is great that it has paid off.
Keep us posted on Ned, dont let him get to you!

Well today I submit my paperwork for the background check.

Hopefully that little prostitution/meth ring that I ran back in the late 90's won't come back to bite me. (yes friends, I AM a pimp  )

Just joking. The thing is, I'm not sure if I remember all my speeding tickets in the past five years. Oh well, I shall soon find out.

No kidding! At it is resting comfortably in my humidor!

BUT, temptation does not go away. I saw an advertisement for a casino that says, "Resist the temptation to resist temptation." Words to live by.

As many of the Mooks know, I failed the physical agility test for the city of Killeen, TX about six weeks ago. I failed it by 6/10ths of a second.

Another local city was hiring, and two weeks ago I took their civil service exam and passed. This morning was the physical agility test. The test had a 6 minute time limit and composed of the following: a 60 ft, 60 degree arial truck ladder climb, a 1-1/2" uncharged hose drag around obsticles, a 180lb dummy drag for 25 ft, a 12' ladder unload and reload, a 25ft charged hose line drag at hydrant pressure with the goal of knocking down a target with the stream, a hose load which composes of 5 3" x 50' WET hoses that have to be stacked one by one on an engine, a third floor tower climb with a 150' arial pack (150' of 1-1/2" hose), on the third floor drop the pack and hoist up a 10lb "the irons" into the window, p/u the pack and go back down the tower and cross the finish line. All this while wearing full bunker gear, SCBA and helmet.

Most guys taking the test were from 18yo to 25. I am 35. I completed the test in 4 minutes and 32 seconds. I am now on a Fire Dept. hire list. Next is background check and oral interview. After the let down a couple of months ago, I fell like i am on top of the world right now. "El Rey Del Mundo". Hmmmmmm............... it might be that this will be a good celebratory smoke tonight!

Thanks for reading!
