Another humidor question

Mr. Slate what are you using to say that the RH is low? is it a dial hygro?

Well, here's the facts: I recieved my humi about a week ago. I rushed right out and bought a digital hygro. After reading some post about the salt test I decided to give it a shot. I noticed that after eight hour test the reading was like 5% variance. So, I waited a while and retested. same result

. . .finally, the thing just won't get above 59%. . .maybe my humi needs to just relax

If it has only been about a week and the seal looks good after doing the flashlight test, I don't think you have anything to worry about. Some humis can take a couple weeks to properly soak up enough distilled water to maintain a stable RH where you want it to be. If I were you I would just put a shot glass of water in there or a wet spounge on a plastic bag and leave it alone for a couple more days (don't open it to check). It took me at least a couple weeks and more than a couple cigar purchases (you need to keep the humi well stocked to keep the RH stable, at least thats been my experience) to get mine to settle in, and now it sits at a nice 65% with very little maintenance. Good luck!

Wow, that's the second time I heard about the shot glass thing.

question: If i do the shotglass thing can I still have my cigars in there or should I wait?

I would wait. Put them in a zip lock bag. If you have a water pillow or a boveda pack it would help a lot. I'd wait until the RH stablizes before putting the stick in there. You don't want them going through the RH swimgs up and down.

Definitely what phish said. Your cigars will be fine in a ziplock or tupperware container for the time it takes to get the humi in shape. The last thing you want to do is put them in too early and have the moisture sucked right out of them by an unstable humi. I know its tough to be patient, but it's best.

I don't know if I would have a glass of water anywhere nead a box of cigars. The chances of spilling the water is too great! If you need proof, I can show you what 1/4 gallon of water did to a full box of 1995 Dunhill Corona's.....

Ouch!

If it has the little humipak thing it should be fine inside a big ziploc. Those are the same as a Boveda pack and should handle a few weeks no problem IMO. Use a freezer bag though if you go that route. Regular plastic bags are moisture permeable to a much greater extent.

I emailed the Fuente store (Tampa Sweethearts) and they said it does have a humidipak inside so it should be good short term. I have one of those humidi bags and will smoke some so I have space in the humidor and bag. Need to get another humidor. Some of the local stores in Ybor City had good prices on some ( lower than their online sites) One guy said they just sold them as a sideline to the cigars but I didnt have space to carry one back on plane. Have looked at CubanCrafters and they have good prices so might get one there. Have a good 4th :wine:
