Anyone Run?

I used to run a lot, all short distance though. I was a sprinter in high scholl, but added milage when I got older to keep in shape and lose weight. I just started back a the gym after about a year or so off (its tough when you have small children). I did 3 miles last Thursday and hope to do the same tomorrow. I was too tired to go today.

Only when being chased by something that bites!

I doubt that I have ran 20 miles in 20 years.

I am however in the process of getting prepared (stretching a lot) to finally address that problem. I do have access to an Olympic size swimming pool so I was thinking about taking that up as an exercise routine instead of jogging. We shall see. Maybe I will do a little of both.

Yep....thats me  here's my general schedule right now. I usually increase by 10% every two weeks until my miles get waaaay up (40-50 a week) then I'll stop for a couple weeks and start over again. It is usually about 3 cycles per year.

Monday - Tempo run 5 miles
Tuesday - Speedwork 3-4 miles
Wenesday - VO2 Max runs ~4 miles
Thursday - off
Friday - off
Saturday - Long run 7 miles
Sunday - Whatever I feel like for ~ 4miles.

*Saucony Grid Hurricane 8s are the best running shoes EVER.

Does watching my wife run a marathon count. So I had a cigar and a beer while I was doing it, is that so wrong.

There are only two things in life that should cause someone to run. Either towards something in anger, or away from something in fear.

Sorry, I'm a cyclist.

Cheers!

You don't ride on busy 2 lane roads and F up the traffic do you?

I certainly do! After all it is legal despite what some think. More people should ride their bike instead of driving everywhere.

I know it is legal, ya'll just make me REALLY nervous.

Actually, I try not to ride on busy roads. Cars make me nervous too! Some cyclists really piss me off too. Some ride two abreast so they can chat with their buddy - Thats not legal, and gives the rest of us guys a bad name.

I have been behind a cyclist for 3-4 miles before and not been able to pass. Drives me crazy.

You have a runner here. I put in close to 30 miles a week currently. I finished two half-marathons so far this year....the last half two weeks ago sub-2 hour. I was pretty pleased with that. I will up the mileage after the summer months to start training for my second marathon in December. Ill be closer to 40 miles a week for those 3-4 months. Its a lot of time on the road...thank God for an understanding wife :)

Ive asked myself on several occasions after a nice long run...is it really THAT bad to be smoking a good cigar and drinking a glass of scotch right after all that hard work? Hell Yes!!!

I am a failed recovering runner. Used to run 30 miles/week while training for triathlons--and yes I did ride on the roads and well below the posted (maximum) speed limit.

Then had some arthritis in the hips that led to an end of running and two total hip replacements.

Soon will be falling off the wagon and getting back on the road. I have an opportunity to run across the Mackinac Bridge (5 miles)with the governor as part of the BigBrother mentoring program. So, I will be working a little harder in the gym and adding some running to my program. Any advice on how to motivate/make training fun for a 13 year old would be appreciated.

They should have to at least follow the spead limit

when i used to be a serious rider i would ride on the road. If you are in good enough shape and you have the right bike you can keep up with traffic.

you get the strangest looks when you do this though...

My wife swims a mile five mornings a week.

My oldest son is an ultra-triathlete (think Ironman, but not in Hawaii), runs & rides with a brace on one leg, does all three with pins holding his tibia and fibula together. Completes one ultra-triathlon per year.

I average them out sometimes by thinking about exercising. Then I lie down until the thought goes away.

Sorry for the late reply STP. Its good to see other people are thinking about if its ok to smoke cigars and run. I love them both so I think I will just keep doing them both. Unfortunately I just broke my big toe running up my stairs(not an exercise, was just in a hurry) so I wont be running for at least 2 months. drag!
