That was Clarence Darrow I think,or some other old time Lawyer, he did it when the prosicuter was delivering his closing arguement , this way the jury was watching him & not paying any attention to the DA. , BTW he won the case . ( back when you could smoke anyplace !! )
If you leave the ash on the cigar will burn a bit cooler , the ash keeps the cherry on the tip from getting to much air & cuts back on the combustion .

Went about 60% of the cigar before it fell.
Didn't change the taste at all. Made me concentrate on trying to not make it fall off more though

He might have done it also but I did read it some place maybe cigar aficanado that it was a famous lawyer who did it to distract the jury .
