My mother-in-law sent me this story. It appears to be true. If it is, it is absolutaly amazing. Can anyone confirm? Enjoy in either case!!

"BEST LAWYER STORY OF THE YEAR, DECADE AND PROBABLY THE CENTURY !

A Charlotte, North Carolina lawyer purchased a box of very rare and
expensive cigars, then insured them against fire, among other things. Within

a month, having smoked his entire stockpile of these great cigars and
without yet having made even his first premium payment on the policy the
lawyer filed claim against the insurance company. In his claim, the lawyer
stated the cigars were lost "in a series of small fires." The insurance
company refused to pay, citing the obvious reason that the man had consumed
the cigars in the normal fashion.

The lawyer sued. and WON! (Stay with me). Delivering the ruling, the judge

agreed with the insurance company that the claim was frivolous. The judge
stated nevertheless, that the lawyer "held a policy from the company which
it had warranted that the cigars were insurable and also guaranteed that it
would insure them against fire, without defining what is considered to be
unacceptable fire" and was obligated to pay the claim.

Rather than endure lengthy and costly appeal process, the insurance company
accepted the ruling and paid $15,000 to the lawyer for his loss of the
cigars lost in the "fires".

NOW FOR THE BEST PART...

After the lawyer cashed the check, the insurance company had him arrested on

24 counts of ARSON!!! With his own insurance claim and testimony from the
previous case being used against him, the lawyer was convicted of
intentionally burning his insured property and was sentenced to 24 months in

jail and a $24,000 fine.

This is a true story and was the First Place winner in the recent Criminal
Lawyers Award Contest.

ONLY IN AMERICA! NO WONDER THIRD WORLD COUNTRIES THINK WE'RE NUTS."

great story.

i dont think its true, but great story none the less.
might just be me but it seems that a good lawyer would have thought that out with a little more care. If it IS ture then that lawyer is a victom of his own stupidity.

I got that joke in an e-mail about a year back.

Because of that I doubt it's true. Never know though...

Sorry, but its not true. We had this story posted here about a year ago, and it was found to be fiction. Nevertheless, funny.

I thought it might have been floating around. I figured someone had seen this and followed up on it. None the less it is not totaly out of the realm of possibility. I think that is what makes it funny and scary. It made me laugh in fear.

I tried to check the truth of this story no truthorfiction.com and was unable to confirm nor denie the authenticity of the story. A great story non the less

I remember that, ProfMarvel. I first saw it a few years ago on another board. It's very funny, and scary in light of the direction our country's taking. Certainly not out of the realm of possibility, but alas, I believe it's an urban legend. It's one of the great ones, though.

darn, I was hoping the "BEST LAWYER STORY OF THE YEAR" was something I hadnt heard of before. Unfortunately, I get the cigar arson story in the mail quarterly from different people. There really should be a list somewhere that newbs can refer to to see all the stories that have already been passed around the length and breadth of the interweb, so that the newbs could catch up with all the stale humor without bothering everyone else by sending/posting the SOS again.

I guess it could be argued that snopes fits the bill, and as noted above they do have a page on this story, but I didnt get the impression the OP thought it was a true story, and I think of snopes more as a way to verify the truth of stories that are purported to be real, true tales, rather than just a way to see if the joke you are about to pass on has already made the rounds 11,792 times.

No bother here, in fact, I was actually looking for it to send to a friend.
