Just wondering if anyone out there has any opinion on licking a cigar a little bit before snipping it. I have heard that it hekps with a cleaner cut and ensure no unraveling of the cap and wrapper. Any feedback?

im not sure if it does that but i do it every time.

in theory if you have a sharp blade it wont matter. i just lick because i like the pre light taste of the cigar. (and then after i cut a pre light draw... i like the taste of that too. )

I tend to lick them too. When I'm using a guillotine cutter I also usually rotate the cutter around the cigar to cut through the wrapper before I clip off the cap. It seems to reduce the chances of a cracked wrapper.
While I usually use a guillotine, but on larger sticks or if I don't have it with me I'll just use my pocket knife and cut a circular hole in the cap. This doesn't work all that well on torpedos though, so I pretty much stick to the guillotine for those.

Ask Capt about the finger pinch method. I have been doing this a lot lately and it works great. You have a lot more control of what gets taken off. I think it works particularly well for cigars the have caps that might get easily ripped by a guillotine.

If your out smoking somewhere & someone hands you their cutter
it is a good practise to cut the cigar without licking it first.
I always carry a sharp cutter -
A fine cigar with a torn wrapper is sad.

I lick the cap while others are watching, and then snip it. No one ever asks for my cutters again.

But really, I use a separate cutter when I'm with other cigar smokers, and don't lick the cap. Else I use a punch cutter (depending on the ring size).

i ALWAYS have my punch cutter on me. i only use my guillotine if i end up with a panatella or a petie carona. I usually stick to lonsdales, toros, caronas, and churchills. (toros being my favorite)

I have not tried the "licking before cutting" thing. But I had a cheap freebie cutter and it seemed ok. Then I got a Xkar and notice that it cuts much better...

Get what you pay for I guess

I agree with you Husher. My rosewood XiKar that I bought from Cigar.com is awesome. Got it for a great price too. I finally got the leather sheath from XiKar, and I take it with me wherever I go.
