Did I kill my Opus X xXx?

Greetings from Texas and a new cigar smoker,

I am new to the forum and cigar smoking. I was given a couple of Opus X xXx's. Smoked the first one. Put the second one in a ziploc with a moist papertowel. To be honest I got sicker than a dog after that first Opus. Of course I smoked it on an empty stomach, and in about 35 minutes! I know, I know. I now know to savor a cigar and to enjoy the experience over a couple of hours.

My question is this. I pulled out the other xXx that had been in the bag, and it would not light. I burned probably half my torch fuel and a few matches trying to light the thing and it could not be done. I have ordered a humidor from cigar.com, and will soon properly care for my cigars. I am just wondering did the thing not light due to overhumidification, or could I have just had a bad Opus? (If there is such a thing).

I smoked my first Hemingway Signature a couple of days ago. I think I am in love. Was one of the most enjoyable two hours I had this week.

Anyway, any advice or help is much appreciated.

Thanks,

Cutter

Sounds to me like the Opus X got way over-humidified. And . . .

ain't them Hemingways great?

Hey Cutter, welcome aboard!

Ziplocs and moist paper towels will often times cause more issues then good. The paper towel lays directly on the cigar and will cause the tobacco to absorb the water or liquid into the leaves which will make the cigar much too wet.

A humidor holds moisture as it evaporates within the humidor and creates Relative humidity, this is an atmosphere, less a direct contact to moisture. This creates an environement where the cigar will absorb moisture, but at a much lower level.

I would highly suggest when buying Premium cigars like an Opus or Hemmingway, get yourself a small humidor to place your prized possesions in, and you will be mch better off!!

Good luck,
Paul

Welcome Cutter, you have come to the right place, the people here are friendly and will help you any way you can.

Eclipse_man has hit it on the head, you probably over humidified it, but it will recover, just give it time. Make sure you season your humidifier before you use it though, or things will go from bad to worse before you know it.

There should be instructions with the humi, if there isn't just google the topic, and something will come up, or do a search here for the same info.

Don't be afraid to ask questions, there is no such thing as a dumb question around here, and nobody will put you down for asking.

Welcome to the Zoo, if you dont want any Opus just send them here ! I will send you a hemming way in return since you like them better ! Enjoy, Vince

Welcome! I hope you got a BIG Humidor  My first was for 50 my second was for 150 now I'm gonna buy a BIG one. I hope you enjoy your stay here. You've fallen in with quite a bunch. Cheers! 8)

I have found that moist (not wet) paper towel wrapped in saran wrap will work fine for short periods of time such as mailing cigars or for use in a travel humidor. Putting the towel directly on the cigars are a bad idea.

Tough break with the Opus. I made the same mistake in my early cigar days (not with an Opus though. :argh: ) Then I learned to put the paper towel (or in my case a damp cotten ball) in a seperate bag inside the bag with the cigar.

BTW what part of Texas are you in?

I am in North Texas, and thanks again for all the help. I have since discarded all papertowels and will rely on the moisture bricks that Cigar.com sends with shipments. I was really bummed too because I was so looking foward to smoking that thing to see how it compared to the Hemingway. What other brands do you guys recommend? I have also tried the Auroa 100 anos.

I'll be honest that Hemingway was so dang good I came close to ordering a box. I can't do that until I get my humidor up and going. It will hold 75 sticks. What is the difference in taste of the maduros compared to the Natural?

Last question for this post. Which Opus is your favorite? I have a possibility of a buissiness contact getting me a box. I thought the reserve de'chateau.

Thanks,

Cutter

Make sure you eat a good full meal before you smoke another Opus.

Oh ya. Don't worry about that. Only took one time to learn that lesson. 8)

The Maduro is often a little sweeter.

As for the paper towel in the bag thing -
If & when I do such things I usually put the cigar in one bag and then that bag in another bag with a damp Paper towl, so there can be no chance of the towel & cigar touching.

Welcome to Amback!

Thanks to all for the warm welcome!

Almost makes me feel less guilty for destroying that xXx.

Don't feel too bad man. sh*t happens sometimes...most of us have been there, done that in one way or another. My little horror story involves my first Cuban cigar. A good friend gave it to me, and when I went to smoke it, I ended up dropping it on the ground, not once, not twice, but THREE times. On the foot. Twice while it was lit. I was sad and pretty mad at myself, but I got over it.

Another time, more recently, I was smoking a Hoyo de Monterrey while helping my dad put up some hurricane shutters. I had to set it down for a minute, and it the wind promptly blew it from where it was sitting, directly into a flower pot full of water. *smack forehead*

I'm sure that won't be the last time I manage to ruin a fine cigar.

Welcome cutter!

I'm starting to see more Texas folks around. I'm up here in OK. I've been very jealous of the "sit-downs" and other social events those east coast members set up fairly regularly. As far as I know, there aren't too many other okies on this forum, but I would be willing to drive to Dallas/Fort Worth for a really cool event. Are there such things out here in the middle of the country? Those of you who set things up back in NE, what's involved, do you need to be a rep or a retailer to make the arrangements?

A bar here in Norman held an event a few weeks ago, charging $75 a plate for dinner and samples, but I never hear about any of the huge events that get discussed here on the forum. (The bar that held the event is entirely non-smoking as of march 1st thanks to the fascist state legislature)
