Has the world gone mad?

See page 34 of the latest CA magazine.

That thing is HUGE. I hope he is planning on spending at least 2 hours with it!

I don't get CA, what's the gist of the article??

Its an ad for Macanudo and how classic they are like an old chevy truck. The guy has a cigar in his mouth, and it looks like it is about 8 inches (20cm) long. I thought it was quite funny actually, since IN MY OPINION they really aren't that great a cigar.

There you go!

I have been surprised at the differences in the cost versus taste between cigars. I have had $10 cigars that were totally horrible and then cigars like ciger.com Cuban Label that are great. I learned quickly that the cost of a cigar has nothing to do with the flavor and overall quality. This makes this hobby even more fun because you get to try different cigars and see which ones you like and can stay within a budget.

Of course I had to buy ONE OpusX to see what all the fuss was about.

I've yet to try an opus x. How are they? I'm just looking for a general concensus.

I think the consensus is that they're great cigars but slightly overhyped. Most of the cigars I smoke are in the 4-7 dollar range but some are 10-15 on a less frequent basis. That said I would gladly pay 10-15 dollars or maybe even 20 but never will I pay the 30-40 that is the norm. Can they be had for less? Certainly. Will you find them, probably not.

As much as I like Opus X, I think you're better off spending the money on serveral other cigars...a Short Story, a Punch Rare Corojo, and maybe a Monte. Platinum Robusto. You'll probably have some money left over to pay for a burger.

I love 'em.

It's nice to have a few in the humi for special occations. However, I'd rather spend most of my money on cigars that are affordable ($3-$5 range.)

The Opus X is the most complex cigar that I have ever tasted. I will say I have had many different cigars, but I have only begun to crack the line up of what is available out there. the opus X is very good, but I think I had mine too young and it did have a little too much bite to get the subtle flavours that were there. It is enjoyable, but if you do not know what you are tasting, it is not worth it.

If I may be so bold.
You should do what I did. Buy two or three and put them in your humi and plan on smoking them in a few years.

Then spend the rest of your money on lesser priced cigars.

ya, that or wait till your birthday, xmas, etc roll around and when someone who doesnt know what to get you or asks what you want, point them towards the big $$ stoges

Good point. But I figure these things have to age, I might as well get them now and "forget" about them.

Besides, family and such can just buy one of those wee little BOXES of Hemingways or something. . .

I think someone posted in an earlier thread that the Opus does not improve with age. It should only be allowed to rest. I could be wrong though.

They are truly best right out of the box. Unfortunately, I can't take them that way, because I can pretty much only handle Girly Man Cigars, or cigars that have been aged so much that they become Girly Man Cigars. I once had an Opus X that a friend of mine had aged at least seven years. It tasted like paper. I once smoked one that I had for five months. It still had nice flavor, and didn't make me feel like I got hit by Earnie Shavers. It had changed quite a bit though, from the signature Opus X flavor. I'd say, let them rest for two to sx weeks, then smoke them. If you can't handle a really bold tasting, strong cigar, don't buy them.

I know part of it is the amount of aging done in the factory but I wonder if the amount of time they spend in the shop has anything to do with this as well. Not many smokers can afford Opus X's in the quantities they buy other cigars in and as such it seems they sit on shelves longer. This seems to be especially true in non-authorized-dealer shops. Any thoughts?

Sorry to thread jack, but the first part of the thread ran its course.

If memory serves me correct, Opus X cigars do come in cellophane. In that case, if true, even a long time in the shop could not possibly qualify as aging, because like it or not, cigars in cellophane are not really aging. They are not getting anywhere near the air exchange volume that they would if they were naked. Spending 15 years in a humidor wrapped in cellophane does not equate to anywhere near 15, or in my opinion, even five years of aging. Having said that, trust me, Opus X cigars NEVER sit around in shops. When a shop gets them in, at least in a major city, they're gone in a day or two.

I'm taking the advice I read earlier, 3 months in the Humi (should smoke it tomorrow). The first one I had opened a can of Whoop*** on me. It was fresh and I waited too long after dinner.

OK then. I just know the shop I go to has had what appears to be the same boxes for the past 8 or 9 months. Maybe not though since I haven't bought any since last September. One guy did just buy 30 boxes of La Flor Dominicana though. Wish I could do that.

Agree with Bloof on this, and taking that I have a few boxes of Opus laying at rest. What I have noticed is that Opus right out of the gate are a crap shoot. The wrappers if I'm not mistaken have some age on them From Fuentes, but what letting them sleep a bit does is gives the wrapper, binder, and filler a chance to marry a bit. This tends to lessen the bitterness that some have mentioned here, and really open up the complexities of the cigar.

A fantastic point was brought up early in that, if you don't know what you are tasting, or haven't developed that skill by smoking many different types of sticks, then smoking an Opus is like drinking a very fine wine or scotch being a beer drinker....you do not have an appreciation yet for what is being presented.

The cost will always be the most prohibiting factor for Opus, but don't think for a second Fuentes is going to do anything about it....They are raking in the dough. I think everyone should have at least 2 or 3 opus, the reason is that not everyone is stellar, but if you have a few to try, I believe you would appreciate the cigar, once one's pallate was capable of enjoying the cigar. It goes without saying that for the money, you could buy a fistfull of other cigars that would treat you to a fantasticv smoke for the same money, so, the choice is a personal one.

First 5 to PM WHO HAVE NOT EVER TRIED AN OPUS!!!! I will send an opus double bellicosa to. This is for people who are interested in trying one of these cigars, remember, if you are new to cigar smoking, I would not reccomend taking me up on this, wait for a few months, then maybe.

I Expect respect on this, most of you know what kind of BOTL I am, so, NO BS! Let some of the folks who are curious through...Then you old dogs can trade me some fine imports for a few if interested!!
