I didn't know about peaty Irish wishkey as I was told that Scotch was dried with peat and the smoke is aloud to wafe up through barley, but Irish whiskey they kept the Smoke of the peat away from the barley.
I have heard the same thing.
You all are making me thirsty. If anyone is by Seattle there is the Single Scotch malt Whiskey society's tasting March 31. It is 60 different Scotches, 3 nice cigars, and a nice dinner $100.
That said I think the whisk[e]y production we know in Scotland originated from Ireland. Don't quote me but if I remember correctly the Ireland is where it started then a great loss was suffered (I think maybe it had to do with taxes or a form of prohibition), then it seems like the whisky concept exported itself to Scotland and Ireland never recovered it's former popularity in the marketplace.
