How developed are you?

No, I am not talking puberty.... On a scale of 1-10, how developed do you think your palate is?

To be honest, I would say I am around a 7, when I am smokeing alot. I can detect certain nuances, flavors and aromas, but not like others. I can tell the difference between Nicaraguan and Dominican or Corojo and Cameroon. But when I smoke less, like this time of year, I'd say around a 5 or 6.

Right now I am a 3. I have not smoked much lately. I can still tell the difference between a Punch Gran Cru and a Punch Rare Corojo however!

(well I tell myself that I can…)

My wife will be gone the entire MONTH of January.

Sad, yes....

I just hope that the guys at Cigar.com will be ready for all of the orders! I will be a 10 by Feb 1.

I'd say a 5/7. I can pick out the flavors just fine, its putting a name to them that throws me. I can't do regions well at all, but that's probably because I've never really tried at it with any amount of effort. Same with ages. I can tell if something has age to it, but not a specific amount of time, though I think I'm getting better at this.

Mostly I just want the experience. If its good, I'll smoke it. It only matters to me if I like it, so I feel no need to be able to describe it to somebody else.

strange... all of you say that this time of year your palate gets worse. I think mine gets better.

this time of the year i dont smoke as much so i tend to focus more on taste.

i think that i am good at tasting things within a cigar but i dont know what country / wrapper it would be if i was blind folded.

In fact this is why i started to catalog cigars in the first place. I wanted to see if a particulat country and/or wrapper had a different taste. Im looking for trends. Im also looking for feedback. If anyone sees a review that i did in my catalog and you just do not agree with it in any way shape or form, please, write a reply. its a good way to learn. That and if i have another one i can go back and try it again but this time looking for what you see in it.

ok back to the topic at hand...

i would like to think that i am around 7 most of the time. but im working on an 8.

I'm probably on the low end of the scale 3/4 or 4/5.
Like Quaqmire, I can pick out slight changes in flavors while smoking a cigar.
As far as origin of the tobacco, haven't even thought of that.
A interesting thought, I'll have to try that.

Always learning something from you guys

I'd say a 5 maybe even 4. :(

If you folks want to help a gal out by donating cigars PM me for my addy.

I am going to have to with 4/5. I don't think I can differentiate the regions very well - but I am starting to pick up on more of the flavors than I used to. I am hoping not to lose what I have developed over the winter.

Brenda - that was one of the best mooch attempts I have seen - I am going to give you a 9 for originality. I would give you the perfect 10 but you need to always strive for something.

I don't know if I can quantify my palate. I know that if I read reviews or a discription of a cigar and what most prople can detect, I feel like I can detect most of them. As long as i'm looking for them. I don't think that I can just smoke a cigar and think to myself...that's a subtle note of oak that really melds well with the spicyness that wraps around the tounge...I can't say that...I don't think that I ever will. What I can say is that I do like or dislike certian flavors in a cigar...wether or not I can identify them on the other hand...that's a completely different story. I would have to go with I am around a 2/3

I'd say I'm a 3/4. I can tell the difference between a cameroon and maduro. Able to distinguish certain "flavors" that I'm familiar with (vanilla, burnt toast, chocolate, etc), but wood (balsa, oak, cherry, press board, cedar, etc) flavors still stump me.

I am a 2 for sure. I know a dog rocket when I find one. I have only smoked cigars for 10 years. I have a great deal to learn. Since my sinus surgury I have had to start over. The flavors of so many things are brand new to me. I had no idea how much my sence of taste had deteriorated with the gunk I always carried around up there. Like the first time you put glasses on, I said, OMGoodness! I had no idea what I was missing.

I would say I am a 4. I can tell the differences between cameroon, maduro, etc. but I'm too impatient to develop my palate on one cigar, I'm constantly trying something different.

I'm probably around a 3/4. If I know what I'm looking for I like to think I can detect it. I couldn't pick out regions, but I can normally detect the changes in a cigar. I would probably fail a blind taste test.

Man! You guys are too hard on yourselves! I am sure most of you are better thank you think.
I learned to differentiate the regional tobacco by smoking two cigars at the same time. For instance, a Nicaraguan and Dominican together. You would be suprised at how much you can detect when you have an instant comparable.

That is a heck of an idea, Capt. I never thought about smoking more than one cigar at a time, but it certainly makes sense.

I would say 7-8. I think that I can pick up on most of the subtle nuances of a cigar and tell the difference between regions. Even tough I might not be able to put a name to the taste, it does not mean that I cannot still detect it. I agree with Capt; you guys are being to hard on yourself. You are all better than you think, even though you may not be able to elegantly express what you are tasting?

I am agreeing with the rest of the gang at a 4 or 5. I am getting pretty good at tasting the different flavors in cigars, but as for identifying them -not yet - but I have a whole bunch of time to get better - and its a great ride!!

I would say I am around a 4, although I've only been smoking regularly for the last 10 months or so. I know what I like and sometimes can pick certain flavors out, but a lot of the time I can't really put a name to what it is. I still don't think I've ever tasted vanilla, chocolate, or burnt coffee, one of which seems to always appear in a review. I definitely can't determine region at this point. Maybe I should revise my answer and go with a 3 after saying this :) Nice topic, by the way!
