Humidity level

I have an Oasis Plus and am very happy with the results. I like to keep my humidor around 65 RH. The Oasis has been a lifesaver in my cabinet humidor. If my humidity dips I try using humi-care crystals for a few days to adjust it. I try to check my Oasis once every two weeks. My problem in the past has been to open my humidor once a day to check my humidity. Bad idea. I've learned to try only opening it if I need a cigar. I try to keep what I want to smoke right away in the top drawer. That way I'm not dropping the humidity as much.

about digital hygrometers

I have several small-medium humidors and noticed that the digital meters were reading all over the place. I finally put them all in a plastic bag with one oasis humidity source and found they varied by up to 15%. Some old Radio Shack ones (no longer sold) seemed the most consistent, with Csonka (usually a GREAT company) consistently reading very low. If you use a Csonka hygrometer, based on my personal experience, be careful you don't get the humidity too high. If my meters are reading 70%, the actual level might be far too high for good storage.

I'll check out Walmart - never thought of looking there. The old RS meters are small and accurate and I sure wish they still sold them. At $10 they were a deal!

Well its been a week with my new Maidlane Crystal 50 humidifier. My RH seems to be runnig really high 74-77%. I did the salt test last night. My digi is 1%off. After 12 hours it read 76%. My Analog read 76% too. After 5 hours back in my humidor they are both reading 74%. The humidity level in the house is 44%. I'm alittle confused by this. I read that my humi and my cigars may be holding too much moisture and to leave the lid open for 4 to 6 hours, then close it up and check it in 24 hours. I'm going to give it a try. Ive got 27 cigars with wrappers on, in the humi that will hold up to 40 or 50. I'm definately going to buy a 200 to 300ct. humidor in a few months with an oasis humidifier.I don't think my current humi is big enough for an Oasis. Thanks for all the advice.

In the meantime, you might want to try a couple Boveda packs in there. In my experience with the crystal media, the gel couldn't suck up any moisture past about 72%. To my knowledge Boveda packs don't have that problem.

I'll have to get a few of those packs. Putting a few pieces of cedar in the humi seems to have helped. Is it possible that my humi seals too tight. I've been having this issue since I got the humi in Aug. I just thought the problem was because the humidity level inthe house was so high. Thanks again for all the info.
