Chicago
Okay time for another rant. I went to a new resturant in Glenview IL a northern burb of chicago. It is a new trendy area that recently got developed and used to be a naval base a decade ago. Anyway I heard about a place called the yard house so I wanted to go for dinner and some beers. CA guys you have many of these in your state. It is a bar style resturant with 100 beers on draught. I arrived at 630 and knew they did not allow smoking inside but had a few tables set up outside on the sidewalk. I am sure this is common in everyones home town where resurants spill out onto the sidewalk.

Anyway since it was peek dining hours I opted to eat indoors and not bother anyone trying to eat with my cigar. (Hey I try to be considerate) After 930 most of the dinner crowd had left and I was wanting an after dinner drink to chase down all the beers I had. I settled my bill and asked for a seat outside to enjoy "a smoke and after dinner drink" The outdoor area was full of younger people obviously forced outsi9de to smoke cigs and drink beer. I ordered a beer and a coffee with my lady friend and fired up an opus fuente fuente.

Not 1/2 inch into the cigar a waiter came over and said they did not allow cigar smoking. I said there was no one eating, it was late, everyone else is smoking, etc. They got a manager out there becuase I was starting to make a scene. Here is the thing. This is a public sidewalk in a township that does not have a smoking ban. I told her if I had every right to smoke outside and if I had to put out my stogie she was going to be left with several unpaid drinks becuase my cigar was worth more then my bar tab. We argued and she comped my dirnks in exchange for me putting out my cigar. (I relit it when I left anyway)

Now my question to you all and especially for the lawyers and rights activists out there. Can I be told I cant smoke if I am sitting at a table of a resturant located on a public sidewalk. And even if they could enforce this, is it not discrimination that cigarette smokers were allowed. Should I write the Alderman. I pay taxes for that sidewalk. Either way it really pisses me off.

NO ONE PATRONIZE THIS RESTURANT (THE YARD HOUSE). WHAT A BUNCH OF PUSSIES!!

That's terrible, just trying to enjoy an after dinner cigar and you get hassled. I don't know anything about the legalities of the situation. But I'd suggest writing/talking to the folks in charge. Maybe they'll try and make you a happy customer again.

You know the Olde Bloofingtonian Sayinge:

The heck wit' So-Sigh-Uh-Tee, . . .

Staye Atte Hohme. Datz jus' duh whey ittiz. :dunno: :dunno: :dunno:

I've been to the one in Long Beach and the one in downtown San Diego...same BS, at least out here they have the law as an excuse. But in your case it's ridiculous. They should be more accommodating considering they're over-charging for the food they serve. I cannot stand places that allow cigarettes and not premium tobacco.

Aside from not giving them your business again, you should contact them through their website and let them know how you feel:

since its their tables it seems they may be able to tell you what to do but im no lawyer. I would write your alderman also, at least he may be able to clarify the exact law on that issue. You could use that information in the future. Next time someone tells you that you can't smoke on the sidewalk you could bust his letter out and tell them to STFU! :D

great idea axe. I wil get ontop of that today.

It sucks becuase i am always careful about to infringing on others rights to not have to be bothered by my smoke but a lot of these places wont even let me smoke. I think I have a real argument on the public sidewalk issue.

It would be nice if there was a site with a good list of cigar friendly resturants and cigar enemy resturants so I would know who has earned my business.

Here is a resturant if I owned it my way.

Full menu like the chop house with steak, seafood, and some bar food. A top of the line wine, scotch, and martini list. Both indoor and rooftop seating. Smoking available both inside and out with great air ventelation systems. Signs that clearly state to the rest of the public that we allow cigar smoking in our smoking section so if they dont want to be bothered, dont sit there. No hats worn at the dinner tabel. Sinatra or live piano music played down in the bar, a great bartender (no cutting cost there, a great bartender can make or break a place). Plenty of parking with valet available. Monthly events including cooking classes, wine tastings, and cigar events. mmmmmm I can taste the 16 oz filet right now.

mac that is aromas, the place i just got back from. Only difference was it was jazz being played and the waitresses were all wicked hot girls. Oh and smoking section only.
http://www.aromascigars.com

edit: looking at their events page they have a pianist too. Even my mom who doesn't smoke really enjoyed it there. And now she wants to open something like it here. The girls were amazing there, it was like the hot girls convention for florida. A lot of wealthy men = a lot of beautiful girls!

Hey Macallan, I was just wondering, were the outdoor tables cut off with a fence or something? Considering that it was a public sidewalk (and not a part of land that the restaurant is entitled to), 1) they cannot tell you what you can or cannot do, even though they decided to place their tables there. 2) I'm not even sure if it is legal for them to serve food there. I know in Toronto, if you want to serve/sell food (or anything) on public space, you need a license to sell/serve on that spot of land. If they did have that license, then they are entitle to tell you that you cannot smoke your cigar since it would be their property.

When smoking was still allowed indoors in Toronto, a lot of places would allow cigarettes but not cigars. I remember when I first wedged my way into the cigar scene, I went to a poolhall and wasn't sure if I should light up my Padron3000 because I heard of so many places that don't allow cigars.

What bothers me is:

WHO DOESN'T WANT TO SMELL A DELICIOUS CIGAR!!!! but instead smell ugly cigarettes!??!

It's really stupid when smoking places don't allow cigars. They're almost degrading themselves. I almost just like hearing them say "Umm we don't serve steak, but ground beef that's shaped into a steak-like-monstrosity only. ONLY!"

ill pick you up, and we can play the tpc sawgrass stadium course since its about 2 blocks away from aromas.

Montnoir,

I love you analogy to steak. How true. It was a gated off part of the sidewalk outside the resurant. Apparently they can get a permit to serve food out there but it is still public property. Perhaps I should have been a real smart ass and just put up my own chair right outside the little fence. I think I will go back and try that. Maybe I can plan an entire cigar herf right outside their little seating section. It will be like a sit in for cigar smokers everywhere :m16:

I think My Chicago friends go to a place call "Ditcas" (sp?)

I can check = PM where you are exactly and I'll find a few smoking places in your area! :D

If it was gated off, then they do have the right to ask you to put it out.

THOUGH, I'm with you if you ever go back and just sit there right outside the gate; then they DON'T have the right to ask you to put out the cigar. Hopefully they won't call the popo's on you for 'disturbin the peace' or something.

Ditkas is a great steak place. Dont get me wrong there are lots of great places to enjoy a cigar in this city. Go to CA online they just featured an article about cigar smoking in chicago.

I was just wondering. At a restaurant or bar that labels themselves as a "cigar bar" etc., are you allowed to bring your own cigars or do you have to purchase one from the house?

The one's I've come across allow you to bring your own. There's one in New York City that now charges a $2.50 smoking fee due to the recent laws thanks to Mayor "Doom"berg
