For those familiar with both of these whiskeys, what is the basic taste differences ? Ive not been a big fan of whiskeys until someone got me turned on to single malt scotch. In the past year or so ive also tried jim beam but i cant recall how it tasted.

Can someone summarize, if its possible, the tastes of the different bourbons, whiskeys etc.

Do any of them resemble the taste of single malt scotch ? Is jack daniels "syrupy" in taste ? How would you describe jim beam ? What are the different varieties that jim beam makes ?

thanks in advance

Jim Beam Distillery, makes "regular" Jim Beam, Jim Beam's Choice, Jim Beam Black, Jim Beam Rye, Knob Creek, Basil Hayden's, Booker's and Bakers. If there's anything else they make that I've missed, my apologies.

As for Jack Daniels, it is Tennessee Whiskey. It is made the same as bourbon, up until the bottling process. Bourbon is "clean" filtered before bottling, through charcoal filters. Jack Daniels is also run through charcoal, but it has been infused with maple sugar, which is why certain Jack offerings may taste syrupy.

As for individual flavors, my personal specialty is bourbon and rye, so I really couldn't give you much of a speech on Jack. As for bourbon and rye, although there are certain "classic" flavors, those usually reminiscent of candy, the playing field is as varied as there are offerings. If you want to know my own opinion of the flavors in certain specific products, you might read back through the pages here where I have reviewed certain items.

Others have also posted reviews of certain products they like, and describe what they taste in those reviews. We have a few single malt scotch fans, like Vince, and they do a wonderful job at describing their views of same. There's a wealth of knowledge and experience in these pages, which might provide you with some guidelines on flavors and tasting methods.

Jim Beam Black has a fantastic flavor. Geez, it used to be on the top 25 list, no easy task with a bazillion brands out there.

Jack: Proof goes down, price goes up. It was much more flavorful in the late 80's, back when it was 90 proof. I stayed with it for Manhattans and such when it went to 86 proof. Now that it's 80, the taste is too diminished for me to waste my time.

Well, Jim Beam Black may no longer be in my Top 25, but out of 72 bourbons, it ranks VERY highly. It's also reasonably priced, good all around bang for the buck whiskey.

What's it come out to with the tax? That's an outstanding price for a 1.75. I'm trying to figure out the per 750 price, that's all.

That's tax, tip, liver foundation fees included. It's around $20.99 walkout for a 750.

Are you kidding? At 31.99 for a 1.75, who's gonna buy a fifth? If you do it that way, you're getting each fifth at a walk-out price of $13.71.

No, no, no, but thanks anyway. I was just exclaiming out loud. You Noo Englindahz get some incredible prices on booze. So why is it you're leaving again? :dunno: :duh:

I liked the jim beam that I had, cant remember the paticular bottle though. Ive been on a scotch trend the last several months. My favorite is macallan, but at nearly $50/.75L im kinda wanting to limit myself to having a glass on the weekends. For $30 & change for a 1.75L, I can have some good whiskey more often.

Also, after trying scotch chilled in the freezer, I now want to try jim beam this way too.

Regarding jack daniels and the syrupy flavor, I prefer less of that, so I think its ol jim beam that i will be buying a bottle of next.

Regular 80 proof Jim Beam is not bad at all for those on a budget, looking for some decent bourbon. For other suggestions, I did some exploration in the realm of El Cheapos, this past season. There's a thread on a recent page here somewhere regarding that subject, that I posted recently.
