High road being?.....

Be cool. You have been given some great advice on more than one cigar board. Simply put; be better than them because you are. :D

My thoughts are it is as much your fault as it is thiers. You want to do an article on theire store, yet you do not present yourself in a professional manner. You should dress appropriately, go into the store by yourself, and then and only then present yourself as a web blogger that wants to write an article on this persons store.

If you go in like a bull in a china shop you will get treated as such.

Just my opinion.

Well yes, but suppose he was Mick Jagger shopping for cigars, or better yet, Keith Richards. Those guys don't exactly dress in tuxedos all the time. Let's say they walk in with those ripped in one knee jeans, with t-shirts, and work boots. Now, because it's Mick and Keith, they get the royal treatment, right? But they're not dressed "professionally," are they? Well, if you're an aging rocker of the black mood genre, it is. There's a guy on another board who talks about going in to cigar shops dressed "down" so to speak, and watching the attitudes change when he rips out a roll worthy of "Uncle" Mike Bloomberg.

I think that being dressed "professionally" is not only in the eyes of the beholder, but also a very discriminatory category, leaving too much latitude for one to be the victim of disrespect. As long as you're not smelling like unfortunately, some of the homeless on the NYC subways, it shouldn't matter what you dress like, as long as one presents themselves in a polite, respectful manner.

Agreed bloof, but he did not go in as a customer, he went in to speak with the owners about writing an article about their store. As a customer, dress however you want, as long as you plan on spending money. But to present yourself as a writer should be done in a professional manner including how you are dressed.

Maybe he could write a how to dress if your going to a certain cigar store.
That might save some people some problems in the future!

hey lets add some fuel to the fire. as I understand part of the story. he was accused of stealing from the store. the owner is lucky he apparently confronted him in a private manner. If not, then you are looking at a lawsuit for false accusation and embarrasing him. my .02

I'll tell you all this - I better be treated with respect in any cigar shop.
If they did that to me - I'd tell everyone!
They would not get anything from me but grief.
I'd of told the guy straight out - You sure of what your saying because I am going to strip naked & if your talking out your A$$ I am going to tell the world - & I would!
There is no customer service these days - WHY?
Beleiev me every cigar shop around here knows me & I don't buy from them. They know I am dialed into the cigar community & more.
If they ain't friendly then I'll go pay $5 more somewhere they smile nice!
Most places (in time) will give me deals because I am nice.
To easy to go online & buy any cigar I want to be dealing with these knuckle heads!

I completely agree with that, and the accusation is unfortunate, they may have thought they saw something who knows, we were not there and do not know all sides of the story. But the real point here is he was presenting himself as a writer, not a customer. Therefor he should have presented himself in that manner professionaly.
I am a member at one of my local shops, probably the nicest in Phoenix. They treat everyone with respect and always have someone in the humidor helping people with selections. But I can guarantee you they will be watching somebody pretty hard if they are dressed way down and handling alot of cigars. We are not talking about small town shops here. As business owners they have to be very protective of heir inventory, and could have been burned in the past.

Just my 2 cents

I see what you all are saying... BUT

If you are going in to do a review of the guys store I think the first thing you do is go in and sit down with him and explain what you are doing. Maybe ask the owner to show you around, ask questions and what not. I think that I would be a little suspect of some one that was fingering all the cigars. I am of the mind that if I touch it, I buy it. Not sure why just my feeling. Maybe the shop has a problem with theft. I don't have a problem with asking, but there is a point were it is to much.

I've known a lot of writers, still do. Writers dress down, way down. They don't do "formal wear."

who said anything about "formal wear". Somk decent pants and a polo would be fine. Just dress business casual at the very least.

I think a thong tank top and flip flops would be awesome. PM Archape he will send you a little outfit to try next time you venture into a store. Just my two cents.
