I have what i consider to be a good box, and i seem to be able to keep the digits around 68-70 , but once i have my cigars in for a while they seem to start to mold??? What can i do to prevent this? Now that my box is empty it is staying right at 70???

Thanks for all the adivce,
Wkahler :?:

First what are you using to measure RH%
1- analog?
2- digital?
Have you salt tested it if it's digital?
If analog - have you thrown it away yet?

Second what type of humdification device are you using?

Where is it in you humidor?

How many cigars are we talking about?

What color is the mold & can you describe it?

The only experience I had with mold is when I put cigars DIRECTLY under the humidifier. BAD mistake. Make sure there is enough room around the humidifier. I see that this is your first post here. Welcome, and I am sure you will get plenty of advice on this topic from some very informative people.

Thanks for response. I am useing a Analog gauge to measure the ph in my box. the mold is on the cigars them self it is just a light green ............... i can kind of brush it off?!?! I had proble about 12 cigars left.........they where cheap but i want to make sure that i fix the problem before i get anymore nice ones. My source of mousture is two holders one circle and one rectangle. I have had ok humidity with it but...............the rectangle one is attached to my box on the top by a magnet and my cigars are directly under it?!?!?

Go to axegod's post titled "look what I found on some Anejo's." Does it look like the picture there ?? Ryan

You may benefit from first buying a digital hygrometer. The analogs can have huge variences. Typically mold becomes the biggest problem over 80%. Be sure to also watch your temperature, you want to keep it at room temp.

Since it sounds like this is a recurring problem I am betting the spores are in your box or in the humidifier. The best way to rid yourself of the problem is to pitch any infected cigars and thoroughly wipe down the inside of the humidor and replace the devices. The mold could be lurking in your devices.

Yeah I think the nail has been hit!

Analog - Sucks!
Your RH could be 90 or more!

You'll need a Digital and to salt test it.

Mold in the Credo & humidor can be a problem.
Remove it and clean the humidor & let it air out.
Then we can reseason it & get the RH right.

Do you use PG & water or just water?

Lets start here and go from there -
Radio Shack has Digi for $20
I hear they work well.
If you are planning on having a dozen or smokes we need to get things right!

Macallan said it best. I was lucky and a little white mold on mine and I've smoked two of the three victims thus far with no bad results. They were still in cello and the others in the box are fine so I know it was an isolated incident (and from what I've read online common with that cigar). Digital is the way to go 8)

Thanks for the response! What should i clean it with? i am new with the care and up keep of my humidor. I have never had this problem since i have had it and i have only had it for about 6 mths. One of the other post said something about a salt test???? I hve my box siting on top of my direct tv box so that it stays kind of warm, that seems to help keep the PH up around 70? Is that good or bad. If it is sitting in my closet where my wife wants it then it is not getting up to the right numbers at all. Any advice feel free to advise!!

Put the cigars in a zip lock - just one and let them dry out a little.
Even though the Analog reads 70% we know it is much higher.
I'd say 3 days the double bag them or pick up a humi-bag at your cigar shop.

First off - you never want your humidor to get warm -
that said lets see
OK, without a real digital hygrometer (and a salt testing) we reallly
have no idea what the real: RH level is - you may find it is really
been 98% with the POS analog and well you see.

Personally I store my cigars at 63% & have them air conditioned

so they are 63% and 67 degrees - I try to never let them get over
70 degrees.

As for cleaning the humidor - I need to check something!
Get back later on this.

To clean it you can wipe it down lightly with rubbing alcohol.
Very lightly and then it must be aired out complety.
Remember that you don't ever want to egt the wood in a humidor
very wet - it can warp the wood & ruin the humidor.

I have also experienced a green spotting that barely wies off and was told it was bloom. This was experienced on some older Monte #2's and it did follow the veins of the tobacco, so you may check that as well, unless I missed where it said you have it all over your credo as well, at which case, delete my post from your memory and move forward with the fantastic advice already given by my fellow board members! :D

Analog hydrometers have been known to be off in excess of 50% or more depending on how much of a piece of crap it is! Digital is the only way to go if you want to smoke your investment. If you don't mind having it rot, then analog is the way of the future!!!

Hope I helped,
Paul

Rubbing Alchohol  Holly cow I would never have thought that was safe. But if Castle says it is A OKAY it must be. I will have to write that one down. It makes sense.

I checked with someone before posting it

I was told it will work, but the humidor will need to be aired out for a few days. (Also don't smoke while doing it :!: )

I have never heard of a Green Bloom/Plume?

As far I know green is mold.
Hard to wipe off is also a sign of mold.

I've seen cigar shops with mold claim it was plume - but :?

Once again...Insert please diregard my previous post as I was misled@!!!! :D

I was unsure myself, but no other sticks in the humi were showing the same signs, and I am absolutely certain the humi in question never saw 72% RH since I have 65% humi beads that I noticed only peeked at 72% before bringing RH all the way back to 65, and I actually calibrated the Hydrometer right after this incident to verify that it was still on, and it was. I removed the offending sticks and set them a flame! :) They still tasted pretty good, so, no harm no foul!

Thanks CC,
Paul

Paul,
it happens to everyone given enough time!
It can be that the store it came from was having a problem
with RH before selling it.

I rarely find stores that keep their RH at the right setting.

On a side note -
if you get the RH right your cigars will taste 200% better!

Bag your puro's and freeze them, that will get rid of the mold, and then get rid of that humidor and buy a new one, as well as digital hygrometer and get a new humdifier.
