Howdy, Humongo! I'm fairly new to the cigar world. I started smoking cigars in September. After reading what you wrote I should be asking you for suggestions  Welcome to the forum!

Hey Brenda, looks like we all started about the same time!

Time for a noobie smoke party! :D

Hello All,

About a year ago,I started collecting cigars, but I haven't smoked any in my humidor. I'm searching the web and am gonna buy 3 or 4 packs of different brands,so I can finally start to sample some and save the rest. Honestly, this is very confusing. I'll read descriptions of cigars - "woodsy flavor with a hint of hazlenut on the palate"-I'm like huh? How can someone 'taste' all those flavors? Does anyone have any suggestions in what to look for in a cigar? Also, is there a right way to smoke? How do you get your tounge and palate accustomed to picking up different flavors? Any advice for this confused begginer would be much appriceated.

First off, welcome to the forum. Second, don't worry about the "nutty notes with a cedar core stuff". Just learn the basics of choosing, cutting, lighting and enjoying your cigars. Soon you will want to pair them with certain beverages and cocktails. After a while, you will learn which wrappers you prefer, and the strength of cigars you favor. The more you smoke, the more you will be able to discern flavors and aromas. In the top of this forum, you will find "stickies". You will learn the basic techniques of cigars. If you ever have a question, read thru the forum, and I am sure you will find the answer. If not, just ask, and you will get a plethora of answers from some of the best people around.

Welcome aboard, stinkyweasel! I'm kinda new myself, and so far I'm just enjoying every cigar I get. Well, maybe not all of them. There are some that I don't like, and some I do. That's how we all learn.

Welcome weasel! I like to try premium cigars that are recommended to me. Cigar Aficionado is a great way to learn what is new out there. When I smoke a cigar all of my attention is on that cigar. Like drinking wine, the nose is your best friend. Smell the cigar before you light it. Take your time. Look at the construction. If you saw what went into making that sweet stick you wouldn't want to take it for granted. The tongue can only taste a few things when compared to what the nose picks up. I like to take a long draw then, feel how rich the smoke is. Is the cigar easy to smoke? Or, is the draw too tight? When you exhale note the finish (remaining taste.) A cigar may be consistent with flavor the whole way or change characteristics the more you smoke. Don't read a review on a cigar you are about to smoke (this may influence what you think you taste.) Compare reviews with your own reviews. I like to keep a cigar journal. I glue the bands for my cigars right onto the page. Write down where I bought it and for how much. I also like to look up the stick (on-line) to find out what country the binder, filler, wrapper are from. Have fun!

Jeeze, I can really get carried away. . . I love cigars!

Hey Brenda, I do the same thing. I log my entries into an Excel spreadsheet.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome! Great tips from everyone. In the next day or two,I'm gonna place an order for some single cigars and start seeing what I like and don't like. I'm also gonna start a cigar journal to keep track of what I like and don't like. I will also start exploring the fourms and start doing some research. Thanks again for the warm welcome! I'm glad I found this forum.

Welcome Beeker, Doc-T, Humungo, and stinkyweasel. As you have I'm sure noticed by now this is a very friendly, very knowledgable forum. Stick around, light 'em up, and just plain enjoy.

Hello

First time here. I'm a father of 5 daughters 8-19yrs. I needed a new hobbie, and stumbled into cigars while on vacation in North Carolina this summer. My wife insisted on stopping at a JR's store on the way home. She heard it was a great store. She and the kids bought some junk, and I ended up with a few cigars, cutter, lighter and a catalog. The rest is history.

My favorites:
La Gloria Cubana
Rocky Patel The Edge, vintage 1992
Monticristo Afrique
Acid Atom maduro
Opus X
Most CAO's
Bolivar Fuente

I'm trying new brands all the time, and still learning.

Yes, welcome. Have you tried the Rocky Patel Edges?

You might like them as well as Don Lino Africas if I remember the Afrique correctly.

Thank you for shopping at your local Wal-Mart.

Haha, welcome man! Nice choice on those cigars...CAO is also a favorite brand of mine, minus the Criollo.

LOL! Grammar can have an impact in daily life hee hee hee.

Welcome jesse52! You already enjoy some of my very favorite sticks, but if you ever find yourself shopping around you might consider the 5 Vegas A line or the Partagas Black Label.

Also, the Cigar.com line is very good; Cameroon, Red, and Cuban especially.
