Yesterday, my neighbor and I had to capture and release a rattlesnake that had slithered into my yard. Afterward, to show my gratitude, I pulled out a few Fuente Don Carlos #2's to settle our nerves. Nothing like living on the mountains around Phoenix!

i was backpacking in philmont (hope thats how you spell it). It was a 72 mile trip. At one point a member of the group stepped on a rattlesnake. They train you for this before you leave to hike the range. You do not move and you have someone come over and cut its head off... otherwise when you lift your foot it bites you. I chopped his head off with my big A$$ knife. That part was almost as fun as encountering the bear that was blocking the path for 3 hours.

No kidding. I have found a few in my yard over the years and typically handle things with the business end of a shovel but my neighbor is a "Earth Day" type of fellow. It seems we have only one thing in common -- respect for a fine cigar.

I have relatively frequent encounters with prarie rattlers. Personnaly, I like them best fried with ranch dressing.

I enjoyed a trip to Philmont in '76. No snakes seen, one bear, lots of deer, turkeys, and chipmonks (mini-bears as we called them). Chipmonks got into everything, even one guy's dinnerplate he sat down when he went to get something to drink. Have always wanted a nice set of rattles to put in my fiddle. Supposed to enchance the resonance somehow. Oh well, back to my Padron ...

I was a Boy Scout back in the 50's & 60's , Never made it to Philmont , but my parents went out many times, my Dad was a Scout over 50 years , sorry I missed it now, but I was never one to go on a hike & sleep under the stars, my idea of roughing it is a hotel with out room service , even as a kid I enjoyed my comforts, as far as rattler & do like it pan fried in bacon fat, rolled in corn meal & a little ranch dressing on the side, I did put it in a pot of rice & red beans one time & it was great, , but dont cook it to long , it just fell apart , I like it with eggs in the morning right along side the bacon with whole wheat toast & strong black coffee , oh yea dont forget the Tabasco ! Enjoy, Vince

When I was a kid (17) I used to get paid to collect Rattlers.
We had those grab'em sticks and cat carriers to hold them in.
I don't remember what they paid us?

I'm always liked the north because we don't have too many nasty critters in the wood.
We have copperheads but in all the years I'm spent in the outdoor, I've never encountered one (knock on wood)
