I'm trying to confirm a story that Mars will make its closest approach to Earth in recorded history when By August 27,2005 it comes to within 34,649,589 miles (normal 63 million). It will be the second brightest object (2nd to Moon) and will appear as large as the full moon to us with the naked eye. I've asked our forum Brothers in the Astronomers section to confirm or deny. If true what a great Cigar event. Hell, it will be a great Spirit/Cigar event. Maybe we can get our Pals at Cigars.com to put together a special package to celebrate the Spectacular in style.

As an avid amateur astronomer I can tell you this is false. The closest approach in recorded history was at 5:51 a.m. EDT on Aug. 27, 2003. The info that's floating around about a spectacular apparition of mars this year is nothing more than a hoax. Scroll down to the bottom:

I can tell you that in 2003, while indeed spectacular, it still remained a point of light to the naked eye. In my 14" scope it appeared the size of a 5 cent piece. Aside from being brighter than usual, the only other characteristic that gave it away was that planets do not "twinkle" as stars do.

Thanks axegod75 for putting this HOAX down so quickly, now, we will have to come up with another "special" reason to celebrate. One would think that to do a Mars hoax there would have at the very least been some claim to life or to link the hoax with the remake of "War Of The Worlds"

I hear Elvis is still around. Smoke one for him.

:cryinlaugh: :rotflmao: :sm_angel: :pumpkin:

Come on Bloof, this Mars thing could have some legs, maybe we have it possibly hitting Earth, or, it will be so close that you can see Elvis image if you are up at 3:30 am drinking some Callahans and smoking a Hemingway while looking through this special filter which we will provide for $9.95 (plus S&H). Regards

Now it all makes sense...I saw Elvis hanging with the Easter Bunny last Feb. in the D.R.

This thread is getting hilarious. How about Elvis gets his by now 513 pound butt out of his seat at McDonald's, goes outside and punches the meteor just before it hits the ground. The resulting Big Bang recreates the earth and the universe in his image, thereby giving credence to the Elvis as Jesus Theory :cryinlaugh:  and, for the rest of time, like in a dentist's office, all living beings go about their day listening to Elvis tunes on a modern universe-wide version of Muzak.

:cryinlaugh: :rotflmao: I can't think of anything worse than having to listen to Elv-ass 24/7!! :cryinlaugh: :cryinlaugh:

axe you have your foot in a bit of everything from cooking to astronomy.

what kind of cigars did you guys say you were smoking today??

CC, glad to see you take a moment from your guest to check in. I thought I might have the correct momentous occasion to break out one of those sticks you were kind enough to send. Glad I could provide some sport with the Mars thing. To damn bad really, I know that if it had turned out to be true that the forum regulars in both spirits and cigars could have had some fun with it as Aug 27 approaches.

I almost always check the boards before I sleep.
I keep a lap top on my pillow.
I have really made these boards a part of my life.
I have found friends & famliy that goes beyond words.
I hang out on 4 boards mostly, but this one has become very special to me. (the smallest cigar board, but one of my most favorite)
Just like the company I keep.
OK back to my coffee & my morning smoke before we head to NY.
(Watching Poker on the Tivo :D )

on a side note - the inlaws brought me a 5pack of J.Cano?
Never heard of them before?
La Flor De Cano - Hababa
As well as a bottle of Absenth (sp?)
The green fairy is going to dance! :?

Well! A little havanna love and some absynth and you should be seeing all sorts of Purple elephants cc! of course good quality absynth is very hard to come by, but wormwood will definately make you smile if you get good quality. Allot of absynths' today are using botanical mixes to obtain roughly the same thing, minus the hallucinogenic qualities of wormwood. Let me know what you think of the synth....I think it's a love hate relationship, you either love it, or you hate it. I don't think it's like scotch where you could say the taste needs to be acquired!

draw a picture of the happy place you go to after you finish about half of that bottle. :drunk:

that will help me decide if i want to try it

Yummy... Well then you know the treat you are instore for! I haven't been able to get my hands on a decent bottle of absynth in awhile! Probably a very good thing though....Mwwwaaahhhahahahahahah!!

After seeing the movie "Eurotrip" I went ahead and found a good online vendor and picked some up. It's definitely something worth trying as long as the bitterness doesn't scare you away.

CC...In regards to the Absynth, I've never had any, but it comes up regularly as a crossword puzzle word. Is it any good? Suppose to have a bit of a licorice taste?
