Ever since I can remember my family has always had pork and sauer kraut on New Year's as a traditional "good luck" dish. I've kept up the tradition since moving out way back when and even my wife looks forward to it. Now the boys... that's another story!

What do you have?

Bagels, lox, onion, and cream cheese.
...Except today, since we got up very, very late. Instead, we had fried eggs, liverwurst, and toast.

Ah yes, I got a couple lbs of salmon and smoked it on the 24th, giving most of it away on the 25th.

I'll have to get back to you on that combination...

We always had black eyed peas on News Years day.

Umm . . . not sure about that, but after that meal, your years can't get any worse

Yeah, my wife's family held that as a tradition. Birmingham, Alabama southerners.
This was the first year since my mother-in-law died that we didn't have black-eyed peas.
So much for (cue the music) Tradition!

Even though its only two years in the making; My Aunts and Uncles can't wait for me to get to my Mom's NYD party to have my antipasto. Nothing fancy; just good old italian provisions and cold cuts.

I think it might be because they do not like my mom's cooking. This year she burnt the gravy (that's tomato sauce to most of youse, but its really gravy cause it has meat in it) but still served it. She is starting to slip and get lazy in the kitchen.

My wife has the notion that we MUST have pickled herring for the New Year. Ever since we've been married, it's been on the menu. It's not that I don't like it, I do. I just wonder where she got that notion.

I cooked up Hog Jaw, Greens, Black Eyed Peas, and skillet bread. Its what my family has always made for new years and it was the first time I was able to make it for my family.

Probably got it from us...
Personally, I'm almost as satisfied with hog jowl and black-eyed peas as I am with lox or pickled herring. It's the lutefisk I can't stand.
