I ordered a box of smokes for my Dad. I'm getting them on Wednesday. I'm out of town on the 19th. Do you think these will keep until the 25th? They are Oliva Series O. I was thinking I can keep them in my Frigador until I leave for the airport. Also, has anyone had any problems with travel humidors being checked in your luggage. And have you had any problems with butane lighters in your luggage?

For any of you experts out there this could be a good article. "Traveling with your smokey treats".

Just make sure they are in your non-carry on bags. I know for a fact they will take your lighter. I had to throw away a nice torch my wife gave me for my b-day, neither of us were happy.

Never traveled with stix before but I know there is a case you can put your lighter in that is DOT approved.

Yes, there is a DOT approved case now for lighters. I forget who makes it tho...

I would strongly suggest that you keep smokes in your carry on luggage. The storage areas in planes are not temp or pressure controlled to the best of my knowledge. This can have VERY bad effects on cigars, and I would not be willing to experiment, esp. not with a gift for Dad....better safe than sorry.
If the cigars are not contraband, you will have no worries....

I think I can buy a torch lighter when I get there that will get me through for less than the 14.95 plus shipping. The cigars are what i'm worried about. Has anyone checked them before?

DON"T CHECK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why chance it? I have traveld many times with cigars and I always put it in my cary on. I don't trust the security going through my luggage and not picking up my nice smokes

Do not check you cigars. Carry on only. They will reach in your travel Humi and grab them like a kid taking candy from a jar!!!!! When they want to inspect, advise them whats inside and ask if you can open it and remove the cigars yourself. I have had a 50/50 insepction rate. Sometimes they check other times they don't. Check with your specific airline to see if you can take your "empty" torch lighter in checked baggage some will let you take non torch butanes filled if they are in an approved lighter travel case in checked baggage. But most important check with your specific airline.

okay, so don't check. I'll leave the lighters at home and pick one up when I get there. Do you think they cigars will keep being out of a humidor for 5 or 6 days?

Either purchase a travel humidor, or put them in tupperware. Both seal virtually airtight and will keep your cigars for quite a while without any humidification. I brought left over cigars back from a recent vacation after 8 days and they were fine. Mine were in a travel humi but tupperware would work just as well.

I think the best thing to do is just send me the cigars and I will be happy to smoke them for you. I know, I know, I'm willing to sacrifice for any of you guys to releave you of the stress of traveling with cigars.

hahaha

Nick, it might be easier to get a big ziplock bag, you can find them by the regular zip lock bags, but these are like huge, you see a mom on the box storing toys and stuff in them, easier to fold up and put in a carry on than tupperware..., and just throw some humi pillows in it, and you got a traveldor that would last way more than your 8 days....just a thought

So you guys are saying to take them out of the box they came in and put it in tupperware, traveldor or ziplocks? The won't be good if I leave them in the original sealed box?

You can leave them in the box, if you put thtat enite box inside a gallon sized ziplog with a water pillow or two.
BUT, if they want to inspect them, you will have to unsel the box ans open it.....

F.Y.I. Cigar Cutters are allowed as caryyone according to the TSA. Common lighters are now allowed. Also:

As of August 4, 2007, in an effort to concentrate resources on detecting explosive threats, TSA will no longer ban common lighters in carry-on luggage. Torch lighters remain banned in carry-ons.

Lifting the lighter ban is consistent with TSA's risk-based approach to aviation security. First and foremost, lighters no longer pose a significant threat. Freeing security officers up from fishing for 22,000 lighters every day (the current number surrendered daily across the country) enables them to focus more on finding explosives, using behavior recognition, conducting random screening procedures and other measures that increase complexity in the system, deterring terrorists. The U.S. is the only country in the world to ban lighters – all other nations, including Israel and the U.K., do not.

So the box seal on Olivas isn't good enough. Thanks for the advice, I'll work it out. Next year he gets a gift certificate.

I'll be taking a trip in April and I plan on taking my cigars and a cutter in my carry-on in a travel humidor. I not gonna let them out of my sight. If they take the cutter, that's ok, but I'm keeping my smokes with me.

Cutters are allowed.
