Putting out your cigar

Hey everyone. Kinda new to smoking cigars. Well I've been smoking them for a while but never had a humidor and cigars available at my house until recently. But hey I enjoy smoking away my money so I figured why not :)! The question I have is what is the best way to put a cigar out? Other than smoking the whole thing now obviously being the best way to do it :).

Thanks guys (and gals) for your input!

Call me a heathen if you will, but unless I'm saving what's left for a relight, I put it out in whatever way works depending on the situation.

Most often that's just letting it die a natural death. But sometimes it means sticking the hot foot in water (especially if its on the stinky side and I'm just done with it) or stubbing it. Not pretty no, but if something comes up, it's not always a good idea to leave a cigar burning till it's done. Some can run on their own for a while.

If you're done with it, just let it go out on its own. Dousing a finished cigar with water also works well- I do that if I don't have a good place to just let it go out and there's some convenient water nearby.

I don't have much experience with putting cigars out and relighting them later as I almost always finish them in one go, but here's what I've heard from others:

Cutting off the burned part results in a better tasting smoke after a relight. If you have enough left and don't mind sacrificing a bit, cut off the burned end. The longer its going to sit the more difference this makes. Be careful cutting the end off a cigar that's still burning. Sometimes the fire extends well past the burning wrapper.
You should also clear a cigar by blowing out before putting it down. I'm a little fuzzy on the best timing for this, but I know you want to clear it before leaving it sit for a while.

Hopefully someone with a little more relighting experience will chime in here shortly.

I have a rather strange ritual that I always do once I'm finished.

I'll wait a minute or so to let it go out. Then I unravel the remainder leaf by leaf and sprinkle it in my yard, or where ever I happen to be at the time. Sort of a "returning it to the earth" I guess.

I do that too!

If it is an important cigar (like for an event) I'll take the band off of the cigar and smoke it until the end is hot on my nose. Then out it in an astray. Though its not really related to the "outing the cigar" process, the band is important as a momento that I keep.

If it is a good enough cigar, I take the band off and the cigar becomes its own event. :D

I take the bands off pre light and put them in a bucket. Not sure what I am going to do with them but I am sure I will find something neat for them. When done whats left just gets set in the ashtray.

If you plan on re-lighting the cigar, it is important that you purge it before you put it down, and try to get as much ash off of it as possible.

When I go to relight again, I then try to remove as much of the burnt area as I can, relight the cigar with my lighter, and puff away!

I have done this with many cigars over the course of the last few years, and find that it works very well.

There you go, another new tecnique to help you in the cigar world.

The cigar has served you well. Let it die a good death by putting it in the ashtray and letting it go out on its own.

I've got a chimenea in my backyard that I dump all my cigars in when I finish with them. When I light that first fire on the deck in the Fall, it smells wonderful. A little like a viking funeral for my old sticks (except no water and no boat).
