Are these cigars worth the price? Also should I even bother with these since I'm new to smoking cigars? Not sure if their going to be to harsh.
Thanks,
Jeff

If you are new to smoking cigars, I would caution you about smoking any size Opus X. They are very strong, and I do believe they are worth their MSRP. Because they are very hard even for established merchants to obtain, it can also be extremely hard to find them at MSRP, which is a relatively low price. If your curiosity gets the better of you, and you cannot find them at MSRP, and you also have the money to treat yourself, then get yourself a couple.

I would suggest that you smoke one immediately, just to get an idea of what a fresh out of box Opus X tastes like. I'd also suggest a big meal, preferably with a lot of protein, like a nice, juicy steak with all the trimmings, fish, chicken, whatever, but a very satisfying meal. Also be sitting down and don't have anything else to do afterward, because you may not be able to get up without falling down after smoking one of these.

Then, let the other one age for six to twelve months, and see what you think. Opus X can sometimes lose a good bit of their bold, rich flavor after even short term aging, but some sticks will retain enough and mellow in such a way as to still provide you with a flavorful smoke, but without the sneaky right hand of Earnie Shavers waiting in the wings.

oh yes, on the opus x... don't pay more than msrp or close to msrp. a lot of people are getting ripped off because they are caught up in the opus hype. if you just patiently wait and keep an eye out you will find them before long at a fair price. im a fan of the opus x so i would say try one, but i don't think you have to rush to go do it. just keep an eye out for them and when you find a good deal pick one up and smoke it.

Good advice, and yes, many years ago, there was a lesson learned quite well after I tried smoking a small one fresh from the store. That won't be happening again, no matter what kind of meal I have beforehand.

Yea I bought one in a local cigar shop once, it was about the size of a churchill and cost about $15.

Wow!!! That's what you call MSRP. You can't find a better price than that. There are people who pay more than double for that cigar, and still come away thinking it was worth it. They're not wrong either. The Opus X isn't for everybody, like me, but if you're into exotic, bold tasting, full bodied, kick you in the head like Bill "Superfoot" Wallace kind of cigars, by all means, smoke up.

Yea I saw the price and thought I might as well. I wasn't about to pay the enormous prices on cigar.com (Not trashing cigar.com or anything). I tried it and I wasn't too thrilled with it. It was good but not my favorite by any means.

Well, they're not for everyone, and like I said, even well established cigar vendors sometimes have to wait for years to get on Fuente's A-List, so they in effect become third party vendors. If it weren't for that, they'd be even harder to get.

Pretty soon Wolf is going to be the official Opus supplier for the forum

Remember gents, the Opus is the most sought after domestic sticks, and just as the cuban cigar market, there are many frauds out there that are very very difficult to identify. Not saying that wolf or others can't get them for 14-15, just bringing it up that there are many counterfeits out there and to be aware. In regards to smoking an Opus and being young to smoking, if you like a full bodied smoke, go for it, I just would suggest many many other domestics that have a very satisfying full body and complex smoke, at much more then half the price! Do a search on opus in this forum, this has gone around a few times, so, search and look into the past suggestions.

Regards,
Paul

Good point Eclipse. I am going under the assumption that Wolf can spot a fake. I guess I should check with him first.

As for the other smokes, we buy those too. But at $15 a pop I will stock up on a dozen or so and set them to aging to be smoked every once in a while.

A wolf can spot almost anything, even fake deer. I once saw a wolf walk up to a plastic decoy deer in the forest, sniff around, sit down and start laughing his fur off. I heard him call out loud, "at least you guys could do something about the antlers. They're SO fake, just like Pam Anderson's boobs. C'mon, you can do better than that." :cryinlaugh:

Once again, I'm not saying wolf couldn't spot one, I'm saying I have had a love affair with the opus and anejo series for awhile and I may not be able to spot these fakes, until smoked! Some are more obvious then others, but once again, there is a lot of money to be made out there selling these so, it is their best interest to make them fakes as good as possible!

I just wanted to beat the dead horse a bit more that there are plenty of wonderful domestic as well as cuban sticks that are just as good of a smoke as the Opus. New folks coming into this have to understand that, since in my experience, people who dabble in cigars tend to get catch phrases, or name, and drop them to make themselves look better or more knowledgable. When a newbie is speaking to these people, they know no different, so they think they must try this cigar, since it's the best in the world!! I like to argue it a bit :) Mind you, I am an Opus/anejo whore, but I'm one by choice, and I also understand and enjoy many other smokes that are just as good!

I'm off the soap box now :D

Let's cut that horse up and take some steaks home before we beat it anymore. I want to tenderize the steaks as I go, not all at once.
