F*ing Jersey
After doing a lot of searching through old threads on the board (and a couple of new ones) - I went out and ordered 2 digital hygrometers for my humidors. I originally calibrated my hygrometer 4 weeks ago and when I got a new humidor I decided to do a double check on it. The reading was 3 percent higher than 4 weeks ago after the salt test (done for 15 hours).

My question....should I also do the salt test for the digital hygrometer or is that overkill?

Thanks.

Yes they do vary at times.
I had readings easliy 7% different from 2 digi in the same humidor.
Do the test and mark what it is & what it should be!

Thanks for all of the input - I was kind of surprised to see my analog be 3% off in 4 weeks.

RazorKings analog was 20% off!
He's doing much better now that he has a digital :D

20% is huge - it's only been a couple of months since I have been smoking cigars and now it's an obsession. I have to admit I didn't read much about the hygrometers before I went and got the humidor - I should have paid more attention.

But you guys are keeping me on the path now.

RH can seriously effect the flavor of a cigar.
Amazingly very few cigar shops have their cigars at the right rh.

Personally I keep my cigars at 63% - Cubans smoke better at a lower RH, but I always keep everything at 63%-65%

letting cigars rest for 30 days before smoking can effect the flavor so much it is amazing!
If your new at this your in for a treat!
I will also give you credit for a new guy - you have done the right thing by learning first & saving a lot of money on sub-par smoking.
You thought you like them now - let a few sticks sit 2 weeks and the same sticks sit 30 days & you will be buying now for next month.
That is nothing compaired to letting a box sleep for a year or 2 or 3
then it really starts to get good!

what CC said, plus you are going to be much happier with a digital hygro. I salt tested my digi and it is 100% accurate (i was shocked). But my two analogs are 6% and 24% off. My one that is way off reads in the 90s  I keep my humidors at varying RH levels depending on what type of sticks are in them but one is 65, one 67, one 70.

Thanks CastleCrest - the funny thing is that before I started reading through this forum all of the manuals were telling me to go with 70%. The last 3 weeks I have noted that most of the knowledgeable members opt to have the RH at the range you are suggesting. This will be my target now.

I am looking forward to another trip my business partner and some buddies are planning to OC Maryland for golf in September. I am already stocking up now because I plan to have them sitting for at least 2 months. Last time there was when I first started getting into them and I was buying them at a store right on the strip. I will be prepared this time.

I guess it is time to start stocking up for next May's trip too!

Since I have two humidors now - how do you determine which goes at the lower and which goes at the higher rh?

well being that i don't have as many cubans as NC my 65% humidor is the smallest one i have. I just think about how many sticks I want at that RH and the humidor that will fit that amount gets set at that level.

I figure I have some learning to do before I am ready to start acquiring some Cubans!

I probably have said this every day since I joined (a whole 4 days ago) but this is a great forum.

do a lot of research or you will get ripped off. I researched for months before my first purchase.

Yeah, I have learned my lesson on research. Besides the forum, where is a good place to find info on Cubans?

For the most part it is taboo to talk about sources for cuban cigars.
As for info on Cuban cigars (not where or how to get them)
I spend most of my time on http://www.cigarwise.com
many friends of mine there and they really know what they are talking about.

You can always say I told you about the place and everyone will be nice, but please do not cause any crazyness.
Every board has it's flavor and I suggest reading a lot and then
asking questions.
You will see many of the people here there.
Also you can always contact me by PM or Email if you need any help.

I'll say this to everyone here - before buying anything please ask me first as I keep tabs on most vendors and would hate to see anyone buy fakes or pay to much.
As Americans it is pretty hard to do anything about it!

OK off to Ny for the day!
See you all tonight!
CC

Thanks CC - I figure info is all I am ready for anyway.

Have a good day.

Greetings from a fellow student

Kelvin. This is a great learning experience, this new passion.
I've been running a 100 cigar desktop since Christmas with an analog. It was fixed so I could not "salt test".
When it reached 72% a few weeks ago, I got scared. My son got me an Accurite temp/Rh unit for Father's Day. Bingo, smart move. I was way too dry.......50%. I was pulling the credo's and adding cedar and I was going in the wrong directions.
As of this morning I'm at 59% with a temp of 68.9 degrees. My analog is reading 82%. I'm working the humidity up slowly.
I'll never rely on an analog again. I would have never figured it out without the guys in this forum.
I've dabbled with cigars for years, but never learned anything about them.
I'm now running a humi with everything from Primeros to Dimplomas and enjoying the hell out of it!
Ravyn and myself are out of SW PA on the Ohio River.
Good Luck!

Thanks Razorking - I actually just read your thread this morning and I have learned unbelieably from it. The cigars are too important to me now to screw them up.

We probably are experiencing the same humidity since I am from NW Jersey.

Good luck with the humidy - I'll be catching you on the boards for sure.

Thought I would post the results of the salt test on the digitals.

Just finished the salt test on the digital hygrometers - one was spot on - the other was floating back and forth from being 75% to 74% so I am pretty satisfied I am relative accurate.

After a couple of hours in the humidor I see that the analogs are off by 3% in one humidor and 4% in the other.
