I Think I found a new home

After an exhaustive search and a cold reception on a competitors board, I think I have found an outstanding resource here.

A little about me. Active duty military, currently sailing the seas on deployment. Quit cigarettes and found cigars. I have been bitten big time. I find the entire cigar culture fascinating. Just can't read enough about it.

Anyway, I have bought two humis, one for here on the ship, and one is at home. My science wiz daughter has the one at home set up already, and based on my findings, a box of 5 Vegas gold is on the way there to rest waiting my return. Here, I have ordered a sampler from JR's which was excellent. The Romeo y Julieta 1875 was primo, followed by the St. Luis Rey Reserva Especial Corona, then the Montecristo Afrique Machame and the Montecristo No. 4. Then I ordered a bundle of JR's alternatives which have been somewhat inconsistent, although a decent smoke once it settles down a bit. Alas, I'm afraid I ordered a box of (I'm embarrassed to say it) Thomp^ons Chavons before I found this site. I'll let you know how they are.

Now, I've read many things about Cigar.com's cameroons and their other brands. Here's my question? Are these short filler or long filler. In all my readings, I've heard you want to go with long filler. I need a good quality, daily, inexpensive smoke to fill my humidor. I tend to like a mild-medium smoke.

You all have been a fountain of info and I look forward to sharing info on this board. Thanks.

The Cigar.com Cameroon Label is a medium filler, rolled in the Tabadom factory, same place that Davidoffs are produced. They are a great inexpensive and consistant smoke, which won't break the bank. If you like other cameroon cigars such as the Fuente Hemmingway line, you will love these cigars.

I believe the Davidoff Private Stock (they use "ungraded" tobacco, so I've been told they aren't really seconds) are long filler, and they are a tad more expensive than the Cigar.com Cameroons. Also, if you for some reason only want to order from Cigar.com, then they don't carry the Davidoff Private Stock.

Here's links to both:

Cameroons: http://www.cigar.com/cigars/default.asp?sid=44209203734&cmd=list&brand=CRAL

Private Stock: http://www.famous-smoke.com/cigars/search/sr.cfm/st/search

I haven't tried the Cigar.com labels, but they come highly recommended, and I'm going to get a bundle each of the cameroon and cuban labels next time I order from them.
I can say the Private Stock are top-notch for their price, and right now are my favorite everyday cigar.

My advice is to try both. Famous has some of the #14 Private Stock available as singles, if you just want to order a few singles from each.

Thanks for the quick replies.

Not to slight the Cigar.com cameroon, what about the other cigar.com labels, specifically the blue and purple? How do they compare to other "house brands"?

Beats me, but in the link I gave, look at the part just above where they sell singles. There's a sampler of each cameroon size, and just below it, a sampler of one Churchill size in each of the c.com house blends. Probably a good place to start.

The Cameroon and Cuban Labels tend to be a little stronger, in my opinion, than the Blue. I also really like the Red.

All of them are REAAAALLY great sticks!

Hay Steppinup, Are you a west coast sailor or an East coast sailor. I get "underway" myself every now and then. Oh Yea, Welcome to the Board, some very nice people post here.

Welcome aboard. I had my first C.com Purple lable yesterday and it was terrific. I also bought the 5 sampler pack. I buy stuff from JR's too. I love the 5 packs they sell, it lets me try a wide variety with out breaking the bank. I like jr's Genuine Pre-Embargo Counterfiet Cubans 1958 Epicure. they have 5 packs, or 50 cigars for 82.00. Cusano make some really nice cigars that are mild to med. And have a good price tag on them. The 1997 corojo toro, is my favorite every day cigar.

Welcome to the forum, steppinup!

C.com's Purple Label is good. Cusano 18's are GOOD!

I have yet to try the cameroon label.

The Cusano 18 Double Connecticut are currently my everyday smokes (well, would be my everyday smoke anyway, along with the c.com's Cuban label). I smoke 1-3 cigars per week, if I'm lucky and have the time.

I still have my Cusano 18 double maduro and '97 corojo in my humi, along with the C10.

I see you're into mild-med smokes, but would also recommend c.com's Cuban label.

Just order up c.com's label sampler pack, and get one of each. Try it out, and see what you like.

Welcome aboard, great to have an other sailor here, I was a cook back when I was young, USS Holidaysburg & USS Hermatage , Enjoy, Vince

or any of the fine account managers as they know their sticks and will also send you a sample or two so you can try to find that favorite. They also have a Friday Special that Alex has put together and is always a killer deal. They take good care of us here.

Welcome, and thank you for your service, very much. Glad you quit cigarettes. They are an abomination and not a true tobacco product anyway. Welcome to the wonderful world of cigars, and like anything else, in moderation they can be a wonderful and even useful addition to one's life.

Welcome Steppinup, it is good to see all the enthusiastic newbies that have come on board lately.

I just wanted to throw my plug in for the CAO Brazilia, any size you get, lots of flavor, but a little more expensive than the C.com label cigars.

I have been buying the Pirannas, and really enjoy them as a quicker smoke!

There you go!

Welcome to the board. I am not surprised you recieved a cold reception elsewhere. We are the some of the last holdouts online that believe in a warm welcome when it comes to cigar forums.

On the note of our Cigar.com labels.

The Purble (Connecticut), Red (Maduro), Cameroon (Cameroon), and Cuban (Ecadoria Sumatra) are all rolled at the Tabadom Factory where Cusano, Davidoff, AVO, and Griffin are produced. The fillers and binders are fairly uniform. We use a dominican mixed filler (medium).

While short fuller is not always great, mixed or medium filler can be excellent or not so good. It is always a matter of where the tobacco comes from. Typically, tobacco used that is mixed comes from some of the ends of other cigars. So using scrap and mixed from Davidoff for example is excellent while using mixed from the Backwoods factory is ill advised. Mixed filler can be a great way to get a better value in a cigar. It just depends on where the tobacco comes from, how it is treated, and how it is rolled.

The Cigar.com Blue Label is a bundled cigar where the others are boxed. These are long filler cigars rolled at the Camacho factory with a Connecticut wrapper.

Welcome.

You will find this is a great place to stay. I lurk on some other forums but don't post there. Sometimes just reading the flames there makes me not want to even say anything at all.

Welcome, Steppinup! I really like the Cigar.com Cuban label. I would say the Cuban and Cameroon are Mild/Medium and the Red is a fuller flavor. I was not a fan of the Blue label because it was too mild for my taste.

Thanks for all the feedback and the warm reception.

I guess that settles it then. I have to order a sampler just to check things out. So many cigars to smoke, so little time.

Only problem is, due to our location, our mail has been hit and miss lately so it might be a while before I see them to report on how I like them.

We will be pulling into a port before too long and I hope to find some good smokes there. Last port, they had plenty of Cubans, but I believe the prices were WAY WAY high. $250 for a box of Montecristo #2. Although I would love to have em, I can't afford a $10 cigar and being a noob, I don't know if I would truly appreciate the difference in quality. Way I look at it, there are so many good smokes out there at reasonable prices, until I have developed my palate, I'm not going to waste my money.

Oh yeah, did I forget to mention that if I spent that much the wife would have neutered me?
