The box of 5X47 Uruhu arrived, and I was like a giddy school girl. I couldn't wait to dive in, as I had enjoyed the Kilimanjro so much.
As I opened the box, my eyes crossed from the aroma, wow, I figured this was going to be strong. But, nothing wrong with that. So, I discarded the cellophane, and let it breathe a few minutes. It appeared perfectly humidified. The wrapper was dark and oily. Construction, "sturdy" and excellent. The cap was perfect, and after cutting, there was no ripping, tearing, or other wrapper damage we sometimes see in a sub-par cap.
The foot toasted easily, and quickly. I like that. From first draw, to last, it was effortless, and produced quite the plume of smoke.
I was correct, the taste was strong, but not the way I had hoped. the first 5/8" or so was like a strong blackberry taste, and not in a real pleasant way. It smoothed out after that. I had so many tastes at once, I thought my tastebuds were gonna call the shop steward, and make demands. I could not tell you what was going on there. Just crazy, I tell ya!
It burned even and had a fine ash, and ash color. All the way down, it burned nice and cool. But I could tell it was very young, and needed time.
I let these youngsters sit for the past few months. Figured it's time for another try.
Once again, flawless cap and cut. The fragrance has mellowed. Upon lighting up, my olafactory senses were pushed to the brink of overload. This time, it was in a very positive way.
First few draws, smooth and easy. The blackberry taste was gone. It was replaced by a real "comforting" earthtone taste. The smells were very, for lack of another word, exciting. It was just like aromatherapy. I immediately felt a sense of relaxation in the first 1/2 to 3/4 inch. The next inch or so brought about some tastes I just can't separate. Like a hybrid of leather and caramel, but not sweet. Yet, the undertone was still the earthyness. I'm confused.
Then, we were on to earthy/leather, with another taste. I don't know what the hell that was, but good. I began thinking, it's the blackberry, but not. So, if you can figure out what I'm trying to say, the blackberry taste was there, but it wasn't. This time, however, it was great, not a put off like last time. All tastes were mixed, yet distinct. All 'nature' tastes, no chemical, ammonia, etc.
It wasn't a strong cigar, but by no means weak, either. With the complexities of taste, aroma, and fullness, it's safe to say, it's not for the timid. It will blow the balls off of a charging bull elephant, but in a calming, relaxing way.
