A thread about Dogs

That's a pretty cool site - wish it had more specific info though. Anyone have any personal experience/thoughts?

When looking at a pure bred animal, the word "drive" is used to describe the energy level of the dog. Many breeds have a high breed and a low breed, it's in the bloodline. For example, I own two rottweilers, they have been the best dogs I have ever owned in my life, and I've owned probably 12 in my life and I do rescue work, with the rescue I've probably seen hundreds of animals in my life.

When talking to a reputable breeder, they should be able to tell you about the lineage of the puppies for sale, and if they were a higher or lower drive. Both my dogs are very low drive, and would be terrible working dogs, but make perfect pets, neither of them have any problems being in their crates for 10 hours, and for the most part return back to their crates on their own after my wife and I have settled into the evening tube watching.

As far as a dog/cat thing, I recommend crating, it is the furthest thing from in humane you can get, and it adds a level of disciple that I have had nothing but good experiences from. That eleiminates the need for the dog and cat to be around each other un supervised.

That's what I'm planning on doing. There is no way I would leave the dog alone with the cats.

Some people will tell you that crating is cruel, but for a naturally denning animal like a dog, they feel the safest when they can be in their own space. Now, of course our little doggy sleeps with us at night, but when she is going to be alone, we still put here into her little kennel.

I agree with Bikeman on this one. When I am home I leave Wallace's Crate door open, and he can often be found snoozing in there. He has his own little routine. When I leave in the morning I say "Ok, Wallace, I gotta go to work" He runs to get in his crate and waits for his "cookie" (dog treat). Same thing when I leave after lunch.... sometimes he is waiting in there before I am ready to go..lol

My dog Torre has an wire cage/kennel that has her bed and some of her toys in it. She is only locked in it when we are gone. She sleeps in it at night, and naps diring the day. She seems to really like having her own personal space. when we have a house full of people, she often goes into her kennel to "get away" from everyone. I think it is importan for a dog to have his/her own space. Torre has the own toy basket too.

Warning on Dog treats

" Owners: Dog treats killed our pets "

Basically, a treat called Greenies, have caused several deaths in dogs. The treats don't immediately break down upon consumption, causing esophageal or intestinal blockage.

I don't think I'm allowed to copy/paste the entire article here, so here is the link to the CNN article about it:

Hah!!!! Been there done that! I've had three and produced a couple of litters. Best looking dog you'll ever see! But Mike is right on every point he made.

What an animal! As close to a wolf as you'll get. Their wild side is only right under their skin. A dog that doesn't think twice about running at full speed for 24 hours. Go for days without eating, buries everything. Loses more fur in a day than 10 other dogs would in a month.

It's a shame that so many people get them only for their looks without researching their traits.

My sister picked up a Border Collie mix for the local shelter, Best dog she's ever had!

Good Luck!

That's crazy! Why is it still on the market? I've always bought Milk Bones for the dogs.

I do not think you have anything to worry about the biscuit type treats... it is more the nylon types that can cause problems.... if I understand it correctly??

Well, my wife and I are swinging by a shelter tonight to take a look at a pooch tonight - here's a link to it if you want to check it out

Possible Pooch

I hope so - we'll have to see - there are 2 retrievers there, one is a lab, the other is a mix. If either seem "right" for us, we'll probably be picking her up soon. Otherwise, we'll be waiting a bit

one of the dogs we're going to take a look at is a 3 year old female Lab

the other is a 2 year old female retriever mix - hopefully they'll know more at the shelter

We did it! Emma came home with us last night!

She whined for a half hour or so when she was in the crate while we were going to sleep, but other than that, she's been an angel.

DO NOT FEED GREENIES!!!!!!!!!!! Those things are a problem waiting to happen. It happened to a close friend's dog, and ended up costing over $3000.00 for the surgery!!!!!!!!
