Calibri Issues

I have a Calibri Magnum torch lighter and I have all kinds of trouble with it. Even when it is warm the flame will burn for a while, then start to sputter and then will not light at all. I took it to the shop where I got it, and they took it apart and raised the factory setting for flame height, it did fine when I left the store, but is now back to the same thing as before.(only now when it IS lit it is more like a flame thrower) I lowered the flame height adjustment myself to a more reasonable level, and it works sometimes...sometimes not. Sheesh, the $3 Ronson I picked up when I was out one time is more dependable than the Calibri. Does anyone else have trouble with these, or did I just pick up a bad one? Should I be using a certain type or brand of butane? I live an hour away from the shop so it is difficult to get there often, but I know they will send it back for me. I just want to make sure I am not doing something wrong before I make that trip.

EDIT: I have drain it and refilled it several times, so I do not think it is simply having air in the system.

They specify to use Colibri butane. Even that doesn't work. My last Colibri is in the Sudbury Resevoir. It went back to the factory three times, and was still junk.

I'll never own one of thier products again.

If you read the small print on the packaging, it tells you to only keep it lit for four seconds or less. Who lights a cigar in four seconds??

Maybe Bloof with his girly man cigars, but not me.

FOUR SECONDS?!?!?! I am doing good to get one lit on 30 seconds! sheesh..... any better recommendations for lighters?

Colibri lighters are notorious for being pieces of crap. Save up some money and get a Dupont X-Tend. One of the best lighters you'll ever buy.

Find a Zippo that you like , BUY it , toss the guts away & replace it with a Z plus insert , I carry 2 of them, because the fuel tank is small & I don't want to run out, ( I was a Boyscout so I am always prepared !) never had a problem with any of them, I also have a torch , it is verrrrry old , one of the orginal ones out , it was expencive when I got it , about 55 bucks , but it still is fine, I got a colibri for Christmas this past year from my wife, ingraved , & so far so good, no problems with it YET , I fill it with the same stuff I use in my Z plus , Lava, I bleed it every fill up & so far so good ! , now watch the next time I get it out , no flame hahahahaha
Enjoy, Vince

All of my Colibri lighters have broke. I've tried all kinds of methods to try and get them to work...Ieven tried putting one in the freezer, which, actually made one work for about three minutes after it warmed up!!

I think some of the more durable ones are Dupont, prometheus and porsche, and of course, A sturdy bic seems to work everytime!

Oh shoot. This is very bad news. I just treated myself to a new Colibri lighter. It stung when I paid $40 smackers. My Cigar.com dual flamer died and I needed a new one quick. I got home and the first time I tried it, it would not work. I tried everything but still no flame. I took it back to the store and the fella replaced it and it seems to work fine. I thought my troubles were over. Now...while my NEW lighter was not working I fiddled around with my old lighter and got it to work better than before so I have been using it. Saving the new one for back-up. Reading this thread has convinced me to go and get some good old fashioned MATCHES! Man.......$40 hard earned shingles, think of the sticks I coulda got. :(

I've had a Colibri for 11 months. No problems at all. I take my lighter apart about once a month and blow compressed air through it. That cleans all the gunk and any ash that might happen to fall into the burner out. I also always used Colibri fuel but now I use Vector fuel which is a lot cheaper and is refined two times more than Colibri.

Just remember to replace any and all gaskets. I took mine apart once, forgot the gasket when I put it back together, the fuel leaked, and I ended up with a flash fried palm. :D

Any Colibri over $75 is going to suck as a lighter, but look REALLY impressive coming out of that pocket. Colibris from $40-60 may provide good service. I have one in that price range, although I got it for less, because of a sale. The best butane torch lighter I've ever had is a three year old Colibri that cost me $18 with shipping. It's on the operating table now, but after three years of hard and faithful service, it's more than entitled.

If you're looking to spend $75 or more, DON'T buy a Colibri, unless you're a metrosexual who just wants to look GQ. If you're looking to spend $40-60, there are better brands. For $0-40, there are also much better brands, but if you can find a Colibri at $20-30, give it a shot.

Jeez, I'm glad I just bought an el cheapie $6 torch lighter (no brand name, no nothing). Works like the Dickens, throws flame halfway across the room if I want, and if and when it dies on me, hell it's $6, I'll just buy a new one and fuggidabatit.

Heck, I think my butane bottle cost more than the lighter. . .

The best lighter I have used is the kitchen torch that came with my creme brulee set. It camelizes sugar, and can even defrost an iced shut car door. Works great for sticks. Just a little big to carry around. I also like wooden matches.

I just got a Cigar II by Colibri as a free gift from subscribing to Cigar Magazine. It looks nice. But dunno if I'm gonna use it, as it's 1/3 bigger than my no-name brand torch lighter.

those cigar II work pretty good i use one as my everyday carry in the pocket lighter so far so good :D

I got one of those no name lighters once when I forgot mine at home. I can't use it though cause it has an extra 'feature' I didn't know about (I swear) that's just disturbing. When you open the cap (like a Zippo) the lighter vibrates. Not even like a pager or a cell phone but it would actually vibrate out of your hand if you didn't hold it tightly. Its honestly creepy.

you sure its a lighter and maybe not something else usefull :cryinlaugh: :cryinlaugh: :cryinlaugh: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

If you find an old calibri that uses Flint , buy it ! the flint type always work, the eletronic , & peazo or what ever they call it suck, but the flint never fails ! Enjoy, Vince

Vince is sooo right regarding the Zippo and the Z Plus. I LOVE that thing!

My Colibris are hit and miss. Got two of free from JRs.
Worth what I paid for 'em.

my colabri does the same thing with the sputtering im about to open her up i have only used it a few times and that was when i decided to get my lotus but i forgot the lotus and the multi tool at my girls house =\
