I was wondering if there is a tax on cigars when you mail them to Canada?

Canadian taxes = bend over and hand over all your money!

I ordered a box because I didn't travel to USA for a while.

A box of Cusano 18 @ $75 USD which was roughly $100 CND cost me $225 in tax and duty.

$335 for a box worth $100''

I am not sure about shipping as a gift though. But the Fedex lady on the phone did tell me that many Canadians opted to refuse the pay the tax and duty and prefered sending the package back.

You can see why.

Some of the cigar smokers I knew would have the cigars sent to a US address and then resent as something other than cigars. I do not condone smuggling BUT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We really dont ship to Canada anymore becuase of this. However, for personal use, there is a loophole if you are recieving the cigars from a personal individual in the states rather than a company and it is marked as a gift. Depending on what province you are in it, it can be tax free or at least less. Note that postal is always better than fedex for internatioanal. A lot of postal goes over the boarder without ever getting stopped by customs to assess duty. Wheeas fedex has a special department that collects the tax for the government. Interesting to say the least.

more taxes collected for the Government = less hassels for Fedex...gotta love back scratching!

careful tom, careful alex, thats dangerous thinking! one could get in trouble for saying such things.

Taxes in Canada are so high that if you find a true cigar smoker
he really is in love with smoking they pay twice if not more for one cigar. Every cigar we smoke throw another or two away!
The price they pay is madness!

Yes Matt, the reality is that you will triple your prices when crossing the border due to the taxes. My brother brought my first order across at Bellingham Wash. for me -US cost $20.00 -landed cost $54.00, plus his shipping it to me. I had another package shipped to a US mail drop, from New York. From what I originally paid to when it got too me it was 2.5 times perchase price Since then I have done more shipping through friends, some gets nailed, some doesn't. Its all a crapshoot that I can see.
