I do mix it up. There are contrband I enjoy, some I don't, just like legal stuff.

Epi #2 and PSD 3EL are my current must haves right now.

Can an Opus X sneak in every now and then?

If you have to...I tasted 2 OpuSex, Power Stranger & Petite Lancero (iIrc), this year, for the 1st time in years...didn't do anything for me, think it's the aftertaste of non-Cubans...so, feel like I'm wasting them, when someone else would love 'em.

I'd say strickly Cuban but every now and again I slip a yard gar or something in.
On the other hand My wife will smoke nothing but!
She is a Pure Habanos snob!

I've a friend who says "yard work is hard enough, without having to smoke a non...smoking a Havana makes me look forward to yard work." 8)

Let's think for a moment that the embargo would someday end. What do you think would happen to Cubans then? I think cigar manufactururs would start to come out with all kinds of hybrids, cuban filler, dominican wrapper etc...kind of interenting to think of what they would taste like....

Only in the USA is there an Embargo.
Wy say this?
I always wonder why in these other embargo free lands they don't do what you are saying????
I have to think because Havana has it down.
Hands down!

Castle, I knew someone would say that! Could still be fun to see what cuban tobacco tastes like when it's not a puro. I would never want them to change Havanas, just expound a little...

one time, a friend gave me about 5 Dominicans, with Havana wrapper...those who don't think the wrapper has much to do with the flavour of a cigar should try one of these...

I read on another post about someone manufacturing something like that. Sounds pretty good to me!! Of course I still need to try about three hundred different cubans of size and shape to even experience the Cuban Aroma and appreciate it. I'm working on it.....slow but sure...

Here the thing IMHO
If you smoke nothing but Cubans for a month or so.
Something happens, the Palate clears and when you go back to a NC there is a metalic flavor that you will have never noticed before.
The soil is different and it makes a difference.
Only those that go a month or so all Cuban will understand.
Still I find NC's that taste OK, but 95% have the metal flavor and just suck!
IMHO

I am sure there can be hybrids that will work!

Don't look now folks, but blending of Cuban tobacco into cigars with non-Cuban tobacco has already been done, long before the embargo. Just ask Carlito Fuente. It turns out it was a not so uncommon practice back in the days of the true free market economy. I understand Mr. Fuente and other long timers in the big time cigar game have some pretty interesting stories in the arsenal of their lives.

I am sitting here smoking a "Cuba Aliados Cigar"
It is a veru cheap Hundorian cigar.
I was offered a deal on these - $30 a box.
The thing was these are the original blend, the boxes
(yes I bought several) are from 93-94
As a 98% cuban smoker I rarely ever buy anything but.
I do smoke Fuente Exqusitos, a small short filler cigar
Not sure why but I like this one cigar - very cheap $70 for 50
They are my quick no time smoke.
Well these Aliados are very nice!
The age has done a lot for them.
I am enjoying the smoke very much.
I know somewhere around 96 the blend changed and they are bottom rung on the ladder now, so I fell into some cheap $hit
that I am glad I did fall into!
So even though I am a 98% Cuban guy every now and again
I find something worth smoking.

yes, that metallic flavour makes me a bit queasy

Finally Castle, an answer I can understand. Everytime I sak people why they only smoke Cubans, I get ran around in circles or given answers that ren't very pleasant. Last night I smoked an Arora Platinum Preferido #2, It had a very similar aroma to the Cien Anos that i've grown to really like. Except less than halfway through it started to taste very bitter, so much I put it down to rest forever. If I started to taste that in all my fav's, I guess at the price for smokes like the cien anos I could very well get a box of Cubans.
Right now i'm content to find a happy median between the best of both worlds

At least in the few Cubans I have experienced, a few different Cohibas RyJ's and Monte's back in 97, and a couple recent ones, I have never had a bitter experience. Is that an aspect Cubans are renowned for??

I have Cubans that at $130-$200 a box
$5.20 - $8.00 a stick will blow the socks of most premium Non-Cubans
When I think of the price of Padron Anny - Opus even Hemmingway Classics they are hands down the better buy.
BUT taste is so personal and one mans likes what he likes.
I am smoking Fuente Exquisito right now.
One of the few NC's I like.
at $70 for 50 hard to beat as a quick cheap smoke.
I keep a box or 2 around always.
I will smoke them all day sometimes and cap the day off with something fine!
Not always - yesterday I smoked Cubans all day.
IMHO the best of the best!
