I'm going to start this off with a little story so you all know my predicament. This morning I was psyched to start off my work day with a La Gloria Cubana which would have been my first. When I was ready to light up, I could immediately tell that this stick wasn't going to work. I took it out of the tube (not a tubo, just an old tube for protection while in my pocket) and heard an audible crunch. With curiousity I closely examined the cigar to find that it was bone dry. Knowing it was then trash I decided to see just how dry it really was. I gently bent it in the middle and it quite literally went up in a puff of dust and flakes. Fantastic. When I got home and checked the rest I found that the non cellophaned cigars were toast (only a few but a small tragedy nonetheless) and the the boxed and cellophaned sticks were dry but not to the point of cracking or anything. I immediately went out and got a hygrometer (yeah I know I should have had one in there--I was just using the refrigerator for temp control) and found it is at 37% RH!!!!! My problem gets worse though, the cigar oasis I ordered won't be here for at least another week! What can I do to save my remaining cigars?!?!? Somebody, anybody help me!

Don't touch them until your Cigar Oasis gets there. After you get it and install it, they will be okay again in six to eight weeks, although I recommend you start out at about 55-60% and increase slowly from there until you're about 65-70% after three weeks or so. Another three to five weeks after that and they should be okay from then on.

you were using the fridgerator for temp control???? the fridge compressor takes moisture out of the air, never EVER do that again! lol

I know higgs, but let's just surmise to say I'm an idiot.

Anyways, I figured the course of action would be to just acclimate them slowly once the oasis arrives, but what should I do until then as they'll just get drier as time goes on with nothing in there?

Wet paper towel on top of a plastic or metal cap, like the top of an old peanut butter jar. That'll keep humidity levels up.

Is where you live very warm?
If so I see no reason not to use the fridge outside of the RH problem.
I know others that do the same thing.
I say that if this fridge is for cigars only!
I would never use it if you have any food in there.
Bloofs idea is good!
You could use a tupperware container and put a sponge in it.
Maybe do the 50/50 distilled water and PG
Maybe even go 70/30 PM/water it will give you a slower build up of RH. WHickh is what you want - to give moisture slowly so the wrappers don't split!
Not sure how many cigars we are talking about?
If you can bag them all do so and add another bag in a bag with a moiste peice of paper towel till the Oasis gets there.

OK all that said - I know a few people that have used fidges for their cabinets, if you live somewhere that is very warm & need to keep the temp down that will work - you will need to make sure the temp isn't to low, but down to 60-65 degrees is OK.
The oasis should keep the rh up - BUT!
WHen the fridge kicks on the RH will drop then the Oasis will give RH to the fridge and when the fridge turns off the RH can get high.
So you will need some kind of medium (cat litter - beads) something to remove excess RH - they can be dried every now and again in a microwave or put into a stocking and blow dried to keep them working right.

Having a large collection can be a lot of work but worth it!
Good Luck!

I had the same problem to a lesser degree. Down to 50% in my 100 cigar desktop due to bad analog.
Accurite digital at Lowes for $20.00 and a rude awakening.

It took me 2 weeks to get from 50 to 60%Rh. Currently holding at 65%.

I did notice a small crack in the foot of one of the Camacho Candela's but that was about it!

Good luck!

i definatly feel like you have no choice but to get a digital hygrometer. And keep those sticks outside of the fridge unless its 80 or hotter in your place.

Chicago has been hot lately, although this week it has cooled off into the 80's!

My humidors are higher than usual, 66%, I left one of my hydgrometers in my room out of the humi, and it read, 72 degrees, 66%!

At least I can leave my humidors open and let them breathe a little bit!!

That is why I use the Climmax Beads.
They will remove moisture if the RH gets to high.
I have a "set & forget" in my cabinet: the finest humidity control and still keep beads in there just incase.
Not to mention that room stays air conditioned at all times.
My babies are comfortable at all times!

I have another week to go before my kitty litter crystals are "set" at 65%. Then I'm going to put them into my recently purchased fridge with a cigar oasis. I also installed a couple PC fans to distribute the moisture and temp evenly inside. I noticed that without the fans, the unit would run 10 degrees warmer at the upper levels. I also picked up an external temp controller and now it runs at between 62-66 degrees. When I get back from very wet NY I'll be putting some boxes in there.

I feel your pain

One thing I have found that works really good, is to get a paper towel fold it up in a small square and get it wet with the distilled water. i dont use a dish or cap of any kind, cuz I want some of the water to get into the wood as the paper towel dries out. This combo of the towel with some moisture getting into the wood has really shot my # over the 65-70 range. My sticks are nice and soft.

But one bad thing, is that im using the cheap brass hygrometer that came with the humidor........My next purchase will be a digital one.

Thanks for the concern and advice everyone. Just after I posted my problem I unplugged the fridge and have kept an eye on it since. I actually just checked the digital hygrometer I bought and installed yesterday and it now reads 66%. Pretty good luck for it to hold steady there. Now I am borrowing a digital humidifier from my brother so I'll have that in there tommorow and until I have a steady humidity I will keep the sticks bagged.

Is there a proper ratio for kitty litter to space? My fridge has approximately 3 cubic feet.

The fridge is in a basement bedroom so the temp varies from season to season. Plus my housemate has a habit of turning the AC off anytime the weather changes.

I will probably get a temperature controller eventually but the fridge actually keeps a pretty constant temp so I'll see just how well that continues before I shell out that 100 bucks. But as I said I have a Cigar Oasis on order and a digital hygrometer in there allready. When I install the Oasis I'll follow Axegod's lead and I'll pick up and install some fans and some neon while I'm at it. I wish now I had purchased a bigger fridge.

You bought a digital hygrometer yesterday? Did you do "the hygrometer salt test?" If not, you should, because it might not be dead-on accurate. Most are off by about 1-3 units, but the one I use is off by 4 units. When it reads 66%, the humidity level is actually 70%. It's very important that you do this test, so that you know if you have to add or subtract whenever you read it.
