Oh yes the Rare Corojo, here comes my rant on the situation. Last year they released late march early April. I just spoke with General Cigar last week and inquired as to why we dont have them yet. They claim that the release was delayed by weather, harvesting, and fermentation delays. Basically production delays. They say that due to all of these factors the release this year will be June and that there will be less wrapper this year so hence less rare corojo. I came accross 40 boxes from last year and put them up on the site last month and I think they maybe lasted a week so I know everyone is in need of a fix.
Here is what I think is really going on. Two of the most recent annual releases from General Cigar are the Punch Rare Corojo and the Macanudo Gold Label. Like I said Rare Corojo came out last year in March/ April and Gold Label came out in June. Gold Label has never quite taken off like Rare Corojo so I think they switched up the dates as Gold Label came out this year in March/ April. I persoanlly believe the date switch was more or less planned in an attempt to attain more of a following for Mac Gold Label. Again this is all speculation from me. I am sure there is some truth to production delays on rare corojo.
Now for the funny part that not many people actually realize. THERE IS NO COROJO TOBACCO in a a Punch Rare Corojo. The wrapper is Ecuadorian Sumatra. It earned its name from the color or shade of the wrapper from the original release. The big joke amongst cigar shops is "The rarest thing about the rare corojo, is corojo tobacco". However, all that said the Rare Corojo is still a magnificent cigar with an increadible flavor. The Magnum is and always will be a personal favorite.
There is only a handfull of authentic corojo wrapper out there. Many people now grow an orange wrapper and call it Corojo. Corojo was a farm in Cuba that was abandoned after the installment of communism. The seeds from this farm were taken and smuggled out of cuba and now are solely owned by the Eiroa's of Caribe makers of Camacho. That is why the Camacho Corojo was the first Corojo cigar outside of cuba and is really the ultimate authentic Corojo.
Corojo also refers to the type of genetic seed grown in Cuba. It is no longer used there due to its suseptability to mold. Some of the other authentic Corojo like that used by La Aurora comes from Cuban Corojo seeds but not from the old Corojo Farm in Cuba.
Anyway enough of my rant. Hope this helps.
