Mysterious Cohibas

My father visited the Domican Republic in Feb and brought back a box of 10 Cohibas for me. However, I question their authenticity. First of all, they are not the Cohiba Red dot or black. In the winter issue of Smoke, there is an ad for Cohiba on page 25. It shows Cohibas with a yellow band that are Cuban. The writing on the band says " Habana, Cuba". My cigars have the writing " Republica Dominicana". The band on mine is identical in all other ways. The most disturbing part though is the quality of the construction which is very poor. When I put my Cohiba Red Dot alongside these purchased by my father, the difference is startling.

Somebody posed a question quite similar to this some time ago. I can't remember the outcome, but I'm sure there is at least one person here that knows the answer.

I fear you may have received some of the dreaded "Faux-hibas"!
They are prevalent in the Carribbean tourist areas, and they frequently make use of very crude, even homemade cigars with copier made bands.
I have had a few civilian (read: non cigar smoking) friends bring me back these gems before. All you can do is smile and thank them. I often toss out the "wow, I have never smoked one like this before..." which is NOT a lie.... :)

I would recommend tossing them immediately. I would question the smokeability of any of them, and once lit, I would be very much afraid of the taste/ aroma they would unleash.

I have to ask, were they in a glass topped box???

I was given one just like this by the guy at my local liquor store. This probably says something about how much I spend on booze. 8) It is not a red dot and has the Republica Dominicana on it as well. It's in a glass tube so I figure it can't hurt anything keeping it in the humidor. I'll smoke it for shiggles at some point with another cigar as a backup if it's truly a dog rocket. I'd be interested in hearing what you think of it.

By the way, Paul, there's a sticky at the bottom of the main page entitled "New? Introduce Yourself Here." Please post when you get a chance so we can learn a little bit about you and to introduce yourself to the group. There's a great group of folks here and I'm glad you chose to come here to post. Again, welcome! :D

Worse than "Smokeabilty" I'd be worried about bettles.
Often these lower quality cigars can be very dangerous to your other cigars.
Maybe you can find a homeless person that would enjoy smoking them.

Those were sold in the US for a long time. There was a trademark dispuit over the Cohiba name and they had to be discontinued in the US. They are not fake Cuban Cohibas, but rather another company using the brand name Cohiba. Vendors in the US sold them for a long time. I have purchased some in the past. They are not very good. Apparently, you have already found that out!

Thank you, Tim. I was searching my brain for that explanation last night when I saw this thread, but as I said over on HCF, Superman had an encounter with green kryptonite last night.

They came in a lousy little wood box with no top, just wrapped in plastic. They look like they're rolled from horse dung!

I heard if you let horse dung age a little it mellows out and turns into a pretty good smoke

paul can you entertain us with some pictures?

I bought a box a long time ago to hand out to my friends whne my son was born. Needless to say I had no clue what a good cigar was. Then I found this place and life has gotten a lot better.

They weren't that bad from my memory. I actually kinda liked them.
