Plowing snow, fun wasn't had by all.

I take it Brenda also does not understand "minus eighteen degrees," either. And I'm not talking about any "wind chill factor." You hear football announcers giving the temperature with the wind chill, as though it were the thermometer reading. Occasionally, they'll let on it was with wind chill.

That's what we had earlier this year in January up my way in the last week of the month. In no particular order by date, just the whole week in review, it was, in ascending fashion: -18, -14, -12, -9, -8, 0, 7. Yup, the highest early morning temperature for that week was 7. That's without the wind chill, Brenda. :sm_angel:

Starting this morning, and continuing all day, so far we have had over 5 inches of wet powder. I know that is a coNtradiction in snow terminology, but it is caused when the temp is just below zero and the snow alternatEly turns into rain/snow/rain before it hit the ground.

YIPEEEE!!!

Oh, byt the way Brenda if you want to see real snow you have to come MUCH further north than Michigan.

I went to New York for a couple of days, one winter. It was 19 degrees and it snowed, ugh, it was horrible! Walking to the subway, in snow, was not fun. I don't ever want to go back during the winter.
The only snow we get in Tucson melts as soon as it hits the ground (and it only snows every 15 years.) I don't know how you all can do it (or, why.) I don't have to shovel anything to get out of my driveway, ever! I'm willing to put up with 115 degrees in the shade. Yes, the summer is hot but, that's what the A/C and a cold drink are for. I'm sorry it's such a drag for you all.

Hey Brenda, I didn't say it was a drag. I'm just tellin' stories off the cuff here. Straight from the hermit's mouth. As a matter of fact, I love it. Perhaps you've seen my post complaining about only 11 inches of snow on another thread? :cryinlaugh:

Nah, it's true, the older I've gotten, the more I've liked the cold and the snow. I do know one thing though, because of my condition, it's potentially more dangerous to me than ever. I also finally surrendered to common sense a few winters ago, and starting dressing properly, and learning how to dress even more properly for the winter. But as long as I am, I'm ready for it, especially really physical stuff.

But after a couple hours or more, it's back to the chicken soup and bourbon. :sm_angel: :bolt:

Hey, I don't want to live in it, but shoveling for a couple hours or hauling back up the hill with forty pounds of groceries, that's okay.

I MUCH prefer being cold to being hot. There is only so much clothing I can remove to get cool, but I can always put more on to get warm.

Plus, the squishy-wishy side of me loves the look of snow on the ground.

I hate the snow. It always snows when I have to work late at the restaurant. Then my wife thinks she needs to shovel. She has to shovel. "Its all piling up and I muight need to go outside for no reason." I keep telling her, "wait till I get home, I will do it." But does she listen, no. She shovels for three feet and then throws out her back. She does it at least three times every winter, then I have to deal with her complaining for the next 3 weeks about the pain. That and no late night bedtime shenanigans.

I used to love the snow, but my wife is too stubborn to listen to me.

LET IT SNOW! LET IT SNOW!LET IT SNOW!! I love the snow wished it would snow everyday... yeah you might think i'm crazy but as a self employed plow truck driver thats how i make my living in the winter months  not to mention it helps keep the ammo stockpile...piled

I love all the seasons...when I get to the end of January though,,,I've had enough of winter

I abhor snow!! We have a wholesale distribution company that runs 5 24' flatbed delivery trucks, and we are in the hills of WV! When there is ice/snow on the roads, nothing goes out. Then I have customers calling me complaining about not receiving their orders.

Last week when it was bad, a guy called me that was doing a job at a power plant that is 60 miles north of me. When I told him the truck had not left yet because the roads were bad he started screaming "MY JOB DOES NOT STOP BECAUSE OF THE WEATHER!!".

I calmly told him "Sir, we certainly appreciate your business, and the couple of hundred thousand you have bought off of us this year, BUT while I am not as concerned about the $50,000 truck or the $15,000 bed, there is a human being driving that truck that is much more valuable than any customer/order! I have my CDL and drive our trucks when needed and I won't put a driver out on a road that I would not drive upon myself." He backed down and settled down after that and waited quietly until the truck got there with his order (once the DOH had a chance to clean the roads up).

I certainly have no problem driving thru 12 inches of snow in my 4x4...ice storms though...forget it. I work at home.

Good thing you didn't have to drive out there and lay alittle of that there "ultraviolence" on em Mike!

It's amazing how rude customers can be, until they are made to realize that the the business person they're dealing with is not a robot, but a breathing human being too!

Way to stay cool headed Mike! (I must admit to having a small hot-button issue when customers assail me... ahem.)

I'm with you Raven. I really like winter, but it seems that the older I get the longer it gets. Heck, in January we are still looking at 3 months of winter yet. We got another inch last night, and the long term is that it is going to continue like this for a couple more days yet. Shovel, shovel, shove, Love that snow! (Sung to the tune of Rawhide)

I know what you mean Mike - I wouldn't want to drive the roads near you before they were plowed and salted!

Brenda... I have been to AZ, more specificlly, Phoniex, goodyear, scottzdale, places like that. I love it there! I have no allergy's and the worst part of the summer is june and july. The rest of the summer is bareable. If I had a choice between AZ or PA, I would defintatly say AZ.

Oh and wolfdaddy... Next time we have a winter like 96' and have 6ft of snow, i'm sending you a ticket to shovel me out.

At 44 I am in my 30th year at this, so it is easy to stay level headed. My demeanor changed alot once I got my permit and started carrying a firearm every waking moment! :) I used to have a snap temper, but now I am alot more tolerant and don't let things get me fired up.

Also, our business is dependent on repeat business, so I have sat there and taken my lumps while a customer vents over some percieved problem with product, pricing, delivery issues or something one of my employees may have done. I don't curse them until the phone is back on the hook.

Having been to our place of business, you can understand why I hate bad weather. You cannot imagine the fun we have with that hill coming off the main road down to our driveway/access road. The city does absolutely nothing in the way of scraping/treating it. Every year we spend about $3G on Calcium Chloride and also have 2 walk behind snow blowers along with a Gravely w/Snow Blade and a Gravely with a 4' snowblower!

Wow - I didn't realize you had to take care of that on your own - that is alot of calcium chloride!

Our cities services are TERRIBLE! Our street is low on the priority list to them, but it is OUR LIFEBLOOD! If we cannot get our trucks up the hill, we don't makea dime! That hill is usually the cleanest street in town.
