Question For The Habanos Smokers

I'm sorry if I offended you guys and you're right, its not a political discussion.

For the record, I don't agree with Castro's ideals and way of life for his people. I just believe we could all live in a peaceful if not happy existence if it wasn't for the selfish nature of the people who are elected to be our spokesmen. That I believe rings true for every country.

When I said rural areas I also said if I was correct and apparently I was not and meant no falsification. But if the US and Cuba stopped fighting, you have to agree that things would in the long run be improved for Cuba. Castro puts an awful lot into keeping American ideals out and for that matter we put an awful lot into instilling them there (we just don't see the effects--at least not economically).

It all comes down to this, who are our biggest concerns in the rest of the world? Yes Castro lives in oppulence while his people do not, but what leader is that no true for? I don't believe that makes him a monster. He is not genocidal and he is not aggressive--but somehow we just have to stop him. It just makes no sense.

In Cuba if a resident is caught arguing with a tourist -
the sentence ;

5 years in prison!

Do they jail people for no reason - all the time!
Do people vanish - happens often!

As for politics!
The Cuban exiles in the USA control much of the Fla vote,
the pull string often that make no sense - to me?
They fight for all kinds of crazy $hit!

It all makes me sad as it is the people that are getting screwed everyday!

I have friends with family in Cuba - I hear first had reports.
It is very sad!
They need freedom - will iy happen in my life time?
MAYBE!

I work with many people from Cuba adn have lots of interaction with them on a daily basis. Here is what I find interesting on their opinions on trade and sanctions. The families of the Cuban americans born in the US all tend to disagree with teh sanctions and think we are hurting the cuban peoople more with the embargo.

However, any person I have met who has personally fled Cuba and lived there under Castros rule all support the embargo and sanctions. They even support the visitation restrictions enacted recently.

Personally I have to side with anyone who has fled the country and has a personal first hand stake and account of what they have gone through.

It's a tough call really.
The Cuban people do not have much access to info.
No internet - no TV at least not anything that shows what is going on in the outside world.

Not sure what the answer to any of it is.
Is a McDonalds a better life?
Well soap & Toilet paper would be a step up.

I lived in the mountains of Jamaca with the Rasta. (1 month)
Never met people so happy in my life.
Things were very simple - but life was good.
Would I give up life in the Castle for life in a hut - No way!
But I learned a lot being there!

I know what you mean about th einternet. I read the other day that citizens are no longer allowed to own computers in Cuba. You have to petition the government to get permission.

On the subject of Castro not being aggressive, he sent thousands of troops to Africa in a bloody action, and some personal friends of mine ran into them in Grenada and sent them home. His efforts at nation building are over now that there is no one to finance him. I believe that the Cuban people want to live in a free society and they are going to have to fight for it themselves. If, they knew what had happened in all of the former soviet block puppet states in eastern Europe it might cause them to rise up, which makes it very important for the Castro regime to filter the news. They are great people, and, have everything they need for a successful economy. Regards

Right now Cuba is free to trade with 99.95% of the people on Earth. There is no excuse for their poor quality of life. Castro is a brutal thug whose actions make me believe he has no regard for human life...ESPECIALLY the lives of Cubans! Most of the best and brightest left in the great exodus. There has been a steady one way stream out ever since. Life is appalling in Cuba. I expect Castro to die any day. When he dies, I expect Cuba to open up and I believe the USA will do whatever is possible to help them repair the damage of 4+ decades. Cuba should be the top vacation destination in the world, I hope we can all go there soon. See ya'll next year in Cuba!!!

if they open the gates to tourists, quality of life will improve greatly. would probly be a great vacation spot for that reason, the people would appreciate you spending your money there so much they would do whatever they can to please you. lets do it!

i wonder though how much good will come to the average person of Cuba with tourism being opened up. the majority of the population doesnt have the capital to invest in the building of resorts. most of that money would come from outside the county, and thus profits would leave the country much more often than they would stay. sure, it would provide some jobs, and some hope. but i dont know that it would be the cure-all. people go on safaris all the time yet but so many on the africa continent live in terrible poverty. go to cancun, not far from the beach resort full of americans are areas without running water and basic infastructure for improvement.

i think cuba can be saved. i think it will take alot of help from the world. also, im certain he has picked the one to follow him in control, thus limiting the peoples ability to gain access to the tools and knowledge necessary to break free.

well, theres my first post and a few of my thoughts...hope it doesnt cause any trouble.

Keep in mind everyone that Cuba is a vacation hot spot for the rest of the world already. It is just run by the government.
