Spring and Summer means Gin

Actually, sulfites are a natural occurrence in all wine, as outlined by Morley Safers report all those years ago. It is only because of certain persons' poor reaction to them that caused the uncovering of the fact that these substances are present in wine, hence the labeling. It's the same premise that has led to the labeling of many things in food/beverages that have always been there. All it takes is one person and a huge class action lawsuit to change labels.

Look at peanut allergies. Ever see someone have a bad reaction to peanuts? I never have, and I've never even heard of it. But all you have to do is buy a box of cookies with walnuts in it, and you've got a warning on the package about the nuts being shelled and ground at a facility that also deals with peanuts, and traces of peanuts might be present, blah, blah, therefore anyone with peanut allergies should beware of eating products that may contain blah, blah.

Same with sulfites. Can't blame this on American wine producers. All wines have them, unless they're specifically removed, and it is stated on the label.

This thread got me thinking about a drink called a “Tom Collins” that I used to enjoy many years ago. So while in a lounge I asked for one and they had no idea what it was and I had no idea what was in it. Anybody know?

I forgot, but well over 30 years ago, a friend introduced me to them, and that was one of my two drinks of choice for a while after that. Delicious. You can probably Google the recipe.

Yep. Drank a bunch of 'em when I was in the Navy and stationed at Key West with liberty at Miami Beach. This was in the mid-50's.

The recipe calls for 2 oz. gin, 1 oz lemon juice, 1 tsp. superfine sugar, 3 oz. club soda and a maraschino cherry and/or slice of orange. Later, we were able to buy bottles collins mix and just added the gin plus ice, etc.

There was also a John Collins which was the same recipe only substituting 2 oz. of bourbon for the gin. Everything else was the same.

At that time, I much preferred Tom over John - - - particularly in the summer. A great cooling-off drink.

O man... we drank a lot of Tom Collins when I was in the navy too. Couldn't be beat on a hot summer day. Of course I drank way too many of them one day (2 of us killed a full bottle in about 30min) and I haven't been able to touch the stuff since.

GO NAVY ! hic up
yea i drank a lot more then than I do now , now I drink for the taste, then I drank to pass the time & see how much I could consume & still be able to function the next day, , , , never did find the stopping point so before my heart stopped I cut back to SCOTCH & a little Irish whiskyat times , Gin Yea its great in the summer if you like Gin, hey I allready had my say & before that white haired old man in Va. gets on my case anymore , I just better shut the F--k up , I remain the OLDFART
hahaha

Enjoy, Vince

Yeah, but you're OUR Old Fart, and we ain't lettin' you go any time soon. Speaking of OLD, jlmarta DID say something about . . .

.... being in the Navy back in the 50's dammmmm he must be Old like Doc Barry or even TOM hahahaha

Well, old is a state of mind. In that context I'm still a teenager. I prefer, however, to think of myself as being like a fine wine - - - I just get better with age.

Couple that with my Italian heritage and you've got an unbeatable combination.

So put that in your smoke and pipe it, um , er, or something like that.

Hee, hee, heee!!! Hey Vince, you ol' Navy cook, you're always talking about pipe smoking!!! Whatcha gonna do wit' dat one?

Watch him come back with being something like a fine Islay single malt, 194 years old.

OLD SALTS never die, they just disolve in the Rum that the navy rations out, OH Dammmm I forgot they stopped that a long time ago hahaha

IMPOSSIBLE! Vince absolutely refuses to drink anything that was made after he was born

JK Vince, this place just wouldn't be the same without you. I look forward to the sundays posts every week.

Also good to see some ex-squids around here. Seems we all shared the same drinking habits back then. I too have mellowed a bit with age and will take 2 fingers of whiskey and a good cigar over powerdrinking a fifth of Military Special with the big dogs any day.

Oh My God, MILITARY SPECIAL !

Interesting bit of info on the MS. When I was consuming some of that stuff it was manufactured by Bowmen Industries of Fredericksburgh Va. The same people who bottle Va. Gentleman.

you mean we can get YOU in a Bottle now Dammmmmmmm ! hahahaha

Ya know, I've heard the old saying "that was before my time" but in this case, Military Special must have been AFTER my time - - - I've never heard of it.

I somehow detect the inference that it ranked very low on the taste and/or quality scale but very high on the 'cheapness' scale. Am I right?

Something sorta in the same category as "MD 20/20" or "Sweet Lucy" at about 69 cents a gallon. Real quality stuff.

Actually it was called Military Club Special. As the name infures it was sold, to begin with, in the military clubs as the "Bar" brand. Remember those "two drinks for a dollar" Happy hours with the "Go-Go Girlies. Man, those were the days. Then the package stores on base started carrying the stuff. Maybe that is why I can't drink scotch anymore, To much MCS scotch. Anyway it was way after you and Vince were swabbing the decks jlmarta. Late 60's as I recall. I was in from 1967 to 1973. Man am I glad tose "Good ole days" are over.
The stuff we were drinking on the beach in San Diego was called "Carlo Rossi's Red Mountain" and it was expensive at 1.00 a gallon. Three choices, Red, White and Rose. That was where I developed my fine palet, on Mission Beach drinking Jug Wine.

that stuff is still out there. It hasnt gone up in price much either!

Back when i was in college (i say "back" like it was more than 6 years ago) we had a thing called "the Carlo Rossi Challenge"

drink one of those gallon jugs in less then 2 hours and not puke. Im not sure anyone ever did it.

i puked from taste alone
