There are two wretched branded whiskeys in the world. One is a bourbon-like concoction called Rebel Yell, which makes drinking paint thinner sound sane. The other is a "scotch" called Old Smuggler, and it makes Rebel Yell taste good. My lord, whoever took a sip of either and decided "hey, let's bottle this!" has to have died at an early age with a pickled brain.

That's interesting. Rebel Yell isn't a bourbon like concoction, it's actually 80 proof bourbon, and I really liked it, although I wouldn't buy it again. Hey, it's the difference that makes the world go round. One man's dogrocket is another man's bliss. One man's rancid diesel fuel is another man's nectar of the gods.

I have a feeling Unk is going to get back to me with something about me worshipping the WRONG God if I actually liked Rebel Yell.

Jim, Jack and I used to be friends. One day Jack made me feel really really bad. Now I hate Jack and all of his friends.

The End.

Whiskey..... :bigpuke:

Nah, taste buds are like opinions, we all have em, and someone else thinks they stink. I've met other folks who like Rebel Yell, but for me it was something like what Russian troops used to do in Eastern Europe: strain brake fluid through a loaf of bread and drink up. Nummy!

I would have to say the bourbon. i like the lest is jack danels, something that happened in my younger days , just the smell gets me sick.
I don,t try many but the best i have tasted is old weller

Don't forget, Jack isn't really bourbon, in the totally technical sense. It is up until it's bottled, that's when it changes to Tennessee Whiskey. It is made through the same type of process, from a similar mash bill, but bourbon must be clean filtered, no additives. Jack and other Tennessee Whiskeys are put through the same type of charcoal filters as bourbon, but Jack's filters are infused with maple sugar. That's where the difference comes in.

Back in the days of my youth I happened upon two brands that made the rotgut hall of fame, both bourbons if I remember correctly. Fleischmans and Four Roses.....Both equally vile.

I also remember the first time I noticed that Jack Daniels had gone down in proof from 90 to 86, I remember that the price went up in my state about that time and I was p*ssed that I got to pay fifty cents more for a bottle with a lower proof than what I was used to drinking. When it went to 80 proof I was just shocked, seems like if Jack Daniels wants to lower it's proof to encourage everyone to try it then why not just make a 20 proof whiskey?.

Just my 0.02

Yes, we've had some discussions about the disappointing drop in proof in some of our favorite spirits. One notable in that class was Jim Beam Black. A few years ago, it was released as a seven year old, 90 proof bourbon, but about two years ago it was re-released as an eight year old, 86 proof bourbon. I never had the seven year old. The eight year old, 86 proof version is pretty good.

I think that the biggest travesty of justice, which has disturbed many bourbon drinkers, is the lowering of the proof of Wild Turkey Russell's Reserve from 101 to 90, in order to comply with certain market restrictions in NYC's trendy club scene. The new 90 proof version is costing more in certain areas, and I have no intention whatsoever of trying it, even at a so-called decent price.

A couple folks who have tried it have panned it, which means there's even less chance I might try it, even if it were given to me free.

Bloofington, I was reading your top 25 list and was amazed, man you got some experience my friend. I haven't drank alcohol in almost a year and a half now but was a bourbon and American whiskey man, at one point I had some fifteen or sixteen premium brands under my belt and thought I was the king of the corn juice. Upon reading your top 25 I smiled and thought to myself, well another job done half assed, lol.

My personal favorites back in the day were the Bookers 127.5 proof and Elijah Craig single barrel, nice after dinner companions to a good cigar.

Another horrible whiskey: Yukon Jack, given the pet name Puke-n-Yack by the crew of merry drunks that I used to run with.

One can't go wrong with Booker's, in my opinion. And yes, I have to admit, I found my spirit in bourbon and rye, and to date I have tried 74 bourbons in my short "career," spanning about seven years.
