can I put a butane lighter in my suitcase on the airplane?

When I flew to Hawaii during the Christmas weekend from LAX (Los Angeles Int'l Airport), I remember seeing signs at the baggage check in and at the security gates (before you head to the departure gates) that stated no butane lighters allowed.

Anyway, here is info from TSA:
http://www.tsa.gov/public/display?theme=177

*All lighters are prohibited as carry-on items. Lighters without fuel are permitted in checked baggage. Lighters with fuel are prohibited in checked baggage, unless they adhere to the DOT exemption, which allows up to two fueled lighters if properly enclosed in a DOT approved case. If you are uncertain as to whether your lighter is prohibited, please refrain from bringing it to the airport.

** Up to 4 books of safety (non-strike anywhere) matches are permitted as carry-on items, but all matches are prohibited in checked baggage

Also note that "ciggar cutters" are allowed as checke-in and carry on.

I assume the rules may change from airport to airport since not all TSA officers/locations may be up to date.

I don't think so.
I knew somebody that got a .38 from LA to New Orleans in his suitcase before. Just because you slipped by security doesn't make it legal.

My advice is to CALL the airline and find out definitively.

Otherwise you run the risk of breaking the law and paying the consequences.

exactly!!! we don't want to hear about you running down the tarmack and getting plugged by an air marshall!

The question is not if its legal... its if he can do it. Ive gotten a pack of bottle rockets in my suitcase which i forgot about past security when i went to the dominican last year.

I left my lighter at home, but had read about the cigar cutters being fine on carry on.

I will just go get either some non sulfer matches or a cheap torch.

It was a pain last night because I wanted to smoke a Partagas black and asked the bartender if he had a lite. All he had was a bic lighter. I made due.
