Yeah, I'm not a biologist, but I thought it took heat to sterilize. I was also worried about hurting the tobacco, but the guy at the smoke shop seemed pretty confident that one day in a sealed container in the freezer would be OK. He did seem a little dubious as to whether or not it would actually kill the mold spores.

I've gone ahead and frozen the remainder of the Thompsons, cause I don't really care what happens to them. I'll just let it be an experiment. I also wiped down the interior of my humi with alcohol, and am presently reconditioning it. I'll let you guys know how things turn out, though I'm still interested if anyone has advice on this sort of situation. Or about the biological characteristics of that pesky mold.

i think its less about sterilizing and more that the cold and freezing kills the mold spores...

Air it out for a long time and them make sure you rehumidify it properly. Alcohol will suck any and all moisture out of wood and it might even raise the grain enough to where it may become rough.

Raising the grain due to overdrying is a danger that I didn't think of. It doesn't appear to have affected mine though.

BTW, I came up with a way to get moisture levels up quicker. I've heard several people recommend putting a dish of water in a humi to bring up moisture levels when conditioning, when recharging beads, or when the RH has just been way too low for a long time. If you put a folded paper towel in a shot glass, so the paper towel is protruding out ~2" above the top, then poor on distilled water til it's saturated, you drastically increase your evaporation surface area, and therefore speed the whole thing up.

First of all welcome to the forum guys, I know you will like it here.

I did a similar thing, except I used florist sponge in a shot glass. That is one important thing that cannot be neglected, is properly climatizing your humidor before you use it, but it sounds lke you are on the right track.

Sorry about the mold problem, but at least it was just on the Thompsons, so it could have been worse. You know what I would try - sending them bac, who knows, maybe they willl give you a refund for them.

Good luck!!!

Freezing works. Do a search to find CastleCrest's informative dissertation and incredibly helpful post on it.

Wow. There's a lot of knowledge stowed away in the archives of this site. I've tried to read up on the back threads, but it is a ton of material. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction, BP.
