I tend to think of myself as a pretty repectful person trying to never bother anyone with my cigar smoking but today I am going on the war path. I dont know if any of you have heard of Max and Ermas but never eat there. It is Ruby Tuessday, TGI Fridays type of place.

I walk in and ask the hostess if it would be alright if I smoke at the bar and told her I planned on smoking a cigar. She said "of course thats fine" I pull up the the bar and fire up a camacho. I then proceed to order my lunch and read my FHM magazine. Great articles this month.

Now about 1 inch into the cigar when the GM comes over to me and explains that I cant smoke a cigar there. I asked him, "can i leave without paying?" When he asked why I said I just ordered my food and the cigar is worth as much as the food so if I was to stay I would eat free becuase I had to sacrifice my cigar or I could just leave and enjoy my smoke. He said not and we exchanged words. I guess I drew some attention from the other patrons during the argument. I guess in the end the buffalo chicken sandwich sounded to good to pass up and I was hungry. Apprehensively I put down the cigar and told the manager that they should post a sign and not tell me it is okay if they are just going to change their policy at will.

Things got awfully queit in the bar/ smoking section after that and I could not help but overhear two girls sitting accross the room say how much they hated my cigar and how glad they were that the manager asked me to put it out. They further went on to explain to each other how cool they thought they were becuase they complained and that is the reason I had to extinguish my cigar. At this point I was half way through my sandwich and had had it. I approuched the girls and explained to them that I have enough respect for non smokers not to sit in their section and light up and I think they are not showing me the same respect by sitting in the smoking section and complaining about the fact that I am smoking. They choose to sit there. She said something in reply but I was so mad I could not even concentrate, I proceeded to tell her how fat she was and how she should had no business being in a food serving establishment.

Needless to say this envoked some tears and the manager was quick to come over and ask me to leave. But hey I did not have to pay the bill.

I am usually not so mean but I cant take these anti - smoking poeple any longer. This means war.

I know the place and the food is high priced for what you get, plus there are cigar friendly restaurants around that appriciate your business. Thanks for the story, I for one won't go back into one. icon_evil.gif

Wow, I feel for ya. I was wondering what restaraunts allow you to smoke cigars at the bar/smoking section? Any other restaraunts been "tested?" I was mainly wandering about Applebee's, O'Charleys', and of course, Cracker Barrel. I always imagine Cracker Barrel would be a great place to go to sit back and relax and have a "smoke and a pancake" and the like. I have seen older fellas smoking a cigar outside on the rocking chairs but never inside in the smoking section. Any ideas?

actally of those establishments, i have been in some applebees that say it is okay and some that say no. However, every ruby tuesday I have been in has let me smoke at the bar.

Wow...that blows. Although I feel for you I didn't know that you could still smoke in restaurants.
Most of the establishments in Toronto need special private club status to light up a cigarette let alone a cigar. So basically there are only a handfull of places where you could smoke and less where you could smoke a cigar. I think most of the province of Ontario is banning smoking in public restaurants. Although I do see the point of this legislation, it sucks if you need to go out for a cigarette and if it's freezing outside.
Sorry to go off topic... It sucks what happened to you Macallan.

I try to eliminate these type of circumstances.I live about 35 miles from Baltimore in a rural area. There are still many neighborhood bars in Baltimore ( no food) that welcome any customers- even those with cigars. These are mostly a shot and beer joint in rowhome areas.Great fun locals like the old days. They are diminishing in numbers but still out there, but they are 35 miles away.
My local town, Westminster, Md, not one place to smoke a cigar and have a drink and/or food.
My sympathy- last straw.

I did a little testing at Cracker Barrel today. 1. I was able to smoke outside in the rocking chairs, but only 1 other peson was out there and wasnt near me.no one seemed to care. 2. I was their the first time when only a few people were there, and a few in the smoking section smoking cigarettes. I was able to smoke an entire cigar, even when I was ordering my food. and eating. I think the reason was not many people were there. 3. I went at lunch time today when a large crowd was there. I didnt try to smoke outside, but in the smoking section I had started to smoke about a 1/4 inch when the waitress came to take my order, she said, "you can not smoke cigars indoors." It seems that is their policy. I didnt mention to her I was able to smoke ealier that morning. I threw it in the fire which I dont think she liked but I enjoyed my eggs and grits anyways.

It may be the same at some of the restaruants like applebees' depending on how many poeple are there or maybe when the mngr. is around. who knows. I think I will try applebee's next :)

Amen, brother. The anit-smokites are crossing the line. I understand the general desire to want to ban smoking in hospitals, restaurants and other family establishments. I can even understand not wanting to work in a smoke filled environment. But if someone sits in the smoking section and then complains about the smokers, @&^% them and the horse they rode in on.

And Kudos to you for attacking the girl's weight problem. I'm serious! I saw the movie "supersize me" recently. If people can bitch out a smoker for having such a "nasty habit", then why can't we do the same to fat people who stick their noses where they don't belong for the self-rightous thrill? Watch the movie and you'll know what I mean.

Non-smokers have taken back ground that they by all means should have. (A cigarette smoker blew smoke in my wife's face at a busstop when she was obviously seven months pregnant!) But now they are going too far and stepping on our rights. I should be able to go to a bar or lounge and enjoy a cigar. But if these idiots have their way, they'll outlaw smoking outright.

Sorry to hear about your experience Mac. Makes me better understand why I'm an antisocial, hermit. I don't get too many compliants from my cattle or my horses. Dealing with people and being in public settings does not mix well with me.

I'm with nmcowboy all the way. Dyed in the wool hermit since about age 12, prior to that had extreme hermit-like symptoms. Now that I'm old I don't have to be explaining it or making excuses for it. Anyone that doesn't like the fact that I tend to avoid the rest of humanity has long since stopped questioning me about it. As for cattle and horses, they are some of the nicest people I've ever met and they are indeed non-contentious. As for my cat and snake, even when they're contentious, they're still no problem to get along with.

Restrictions

As bad as you think it is, you could be in FLorida. Though you can smoke outside most of the time (weather permitting), the "Indoor Clean Air Act" prohibits ANY smoking where food is served. Enjoy whatever you got, it won't be around for long. Luckily, there's a cigar store/lounge a mile from the house. Someone must be looking out for me.

People can be a real pain when it comes to cigars. It's always the girls huffing on cigarettes that seem to complain about my cigars. One time, I was smoking a Monte 2 at a bar I frequent all the time. I was nubbing the thing when the Bartender asked if I could put out my cigar, that two girls were complaining about it. I had a few beers and some Jameson in me at this point and normally would have politely said that I do mind, and that there is a no smoking section if they don't like it etc...but I was compliant and since I needed a roach clip at this point didn't mind. Then the bartender brought me another drink and said it was on the house since I had to put it out. I was pretty shocked at that one, made me think twice.

Another time I walked into a lounge here in Chicago smoking a cigar and proceeded to smoke the whole thing. Immediately after I lit another one, a bouncer (which for some reaseon never like me, even without cigars) came to me and said cigar smoking isn't allowed, I told him I had already smoked an entire cigar that I put out two minutes prior, he said he didn't notice it :?: So I finally told him that I would just leave with the ten people I came with to go to a cigar friendly establishment adn purchase our drinks there. In the end he got me a table and let me smoke....
It's always a different story no matter where you go, or whose working...it's pretty rediculous....

Wow sorry to hear that bro. I'm with Bloof & NMC here. screw thos damn places. I' smoke at home, wife don't complain (much LOL).

This is the best topic in my opinion. It is our future.Generally, If one pays his money he is entitled to the services offered. These services change- cigar smoking- depending on who is the boss at that time- reference the complaints. This is a moving target- hard to solve.
I have my tricks- many have failed depending upon the joint one is in and the surrounding clients- WOMEN.
I suggest- shot & beer joints, or those that promote a bar business and sell premium cigars. If they sell cigars- you can smoke.
We all need to use good judgement where we go to smoke sticks.

I sympathize with you Macallan. Living roughly between San Diego and L.A. means I'd have to drive 1hr+ just to smoke at one of the few indoor establishmets left which allow it. I'd rather spend my cash on a few good sticks rather than pay the high fuel prices just to get to them.
Here's something for your amusement...
A couple of years ago I was sitting on my deck minding my own business and enjoying a cigar. All of a sudden one of my neighbors sticks his head over the fence and had the stones to ask if I could put out my cigar or go inside because the smell was bothering him! After my initial urge to go over and blow smoke in his face, I calmly stated that there were only two ways I would comply: either he starts buying my cigars for me, or starts paying my mortgage. I even went so far as to say if he truly had a problem with it he should file a complaint with the Homeowners Association...the president is a smoking buddy so I had nothing to worry about! He just went back into his house mumbling to himself. But just to show there were no hard feelings I put a cigar in his mailbox and invited him to a cookout/smokeout with some friends that weekend...but he never showed :(
He moved away last September and although my new neighbor doesn't smoke, he enjoys the smell. It's only a matter of time until he gives in though.

Anyway, enough rambling

oh man, that would piss me off to no end. how close was he to you while you were smoking it?

thanks to all the anti tobaco adds and all that garbage, nocking people for smoking has become very fashionable. even though those comercials are really anti cigarettes. have you seen one with a guy smoking a cigar? i dont think so. dont get me wrong here, cigarettes are nasty, cigars are not.
