cigar reviews

Oh yeah, right, I keep forgetting that last week, . . .

I had a great cigar I keep forgetting to tell you about. I was really in the mood for one, but didn't feel like anything that was going to taste too strong, with or without a kick. The number of light Connecticut shade wrapped cigars in my four desk top humidors is shrinking, but I decided to...

    At Bloofington's request.Review Uruhu

The box of 5X47 Uruhu arrived, and I was like a giddy school girl. I couldn't wait to dive in, as I had enjoyed the Kilimanjro so much. As I opened the box, my eyes crossed from the aroma, wow, I figured this was going to be strong. But, nothing wrong with that. So, I discarded the cellophane...

As a beautiful, dry, cool Friday afternoon . . .

wound down and the Bob Grant radio show was coming to an end, I lit one of "those cigars" that I found in the bottom of Desk Top III. You know "those cigars." They are the no name cigars people give you and you put them in your humidor, chuckling to yourself "yeah, sure I MIGHT smoke this...

An Avo Maduro Churchill on . . .

a contemplative weekend, now 30 years and one day out of high school. I lit this large 7 1/2 x 52 cigar at 1740 hours, plucked from the bottom of Desk Top IV, reading at 72% humidity here in Pleasant Valley Sunday, USA on a beautiful, crisp early summer day with the birds hopping about, all...

A cheap cigar review... and a fishing report to boot

The first thing I noticed were the swallows. Dozens of them. Diving out of the slate-gray day and skimming across the surface of the water. Sometimes only millimeters above the rushing river. From the bend upstream where the Colorado River turned toward us carrying water that, less than...

As the temperature eased its way to . . .

a dry, sunny, beautiful 76 degrees, I pulled out a cigar from the bottom of Desk Top IV, holding nicely at 66%. It was an Oliva "O" Churchill, 6 7/8 x 48. A bit lumpy on the construction, but nice nonetheless, nice roll, veiny dark brown wrapper, sitting around for who knows how long. And...

    Friday evening, towards sunset, . . .

before the one mile walk down the hill to the supermarket, a weed spraying and pest spraying cigar. I decided to go simple, basic, just like the beautiful spring day we had up here yesterday, just like today. 70's, low humidity, birds singing everywhere, a quiet, sun-filled, beautifully...

    The thunderous kick of a tiny . . .

Cuban, a real Cuban, and a really good Cuban. It measured 4.5 x 34. The band said H. Upmann. Lit at 2022 hours, finished at 2052 hours. Flavor profile of--------- WHAT IS THAT ANYWAY?!?!?!?!!??? I guess that's the taste of supremely refined tobacco. Char, chili peppers with...

    Thursday morning cigar. . . .

I left work at the firm and went to pick up a disk and papers from a friend with some freelance work for me to do. Walking down Third Avenue as people rushed to work on the sidewalk all around me, I looked up at an overcast sky. It was quite breezy too, but towards the downtown area I saw a...

    Once in a while you find a good one. . . .

Lone Wolf, that is. Most of these suck. OOPS, I DID IT AGAIN!!!! Hey, can a Moderator say "suck" around here? I think I'm about to find out. One thing I found out after I smoked that delicious Lone Wolf Toro Monday morning after leaving work is that the wrapper was sun grown. Wal...

    Arturo Fuente Maduro Churchill. . . .

An early morning cigar, lit at 0752 hours, shortly before having my second quart sized Freedom Press of fine, fresh ground coffee, Java Estate. I pulled this out of the bottom of Desk Top IV, a well constructed, very dark beauty of a cigar that I figure I've had at least two years, well aged...

    A great new cigar. . . .

You may remember not too long ago when I posted about the renewal of my membership in the J.C. Newman Cigar Connoisseurs Club, a club I joined a few years ago. This year J.C. Newman kicked their membership benefits up to "notches previously unknown" (thank you, Emeril) by gracing us with four...

    Romeo Y Julieta Edicion Limitada 2002. . . .

I do believe this was genuine. As near as I can figure that was the famed trademark triple cap, which I understand is now being copied by Non-Cuban cigar manufacturers. It came from one of the reliable sources that I have had the good fortune to make the acquaintance of in years gone by on...

    Dunhill Peravia. . . .

This one was a gift from a friend, 7 1/2x50 size, and must've spent at least two years in my humidor. At one time when I was keeping a Top Ten favorite cigars list, this was No. 2, spending a long time at No. 1 and then getting edged out by the Diana Silvius Churchill. It's hard to say what...

    This Week In Bloof: . . .

Sunday Afternoon In The Yahd, But Not In Bahstin . . . an El Rey Del Mundo robusto, a nice cigar to walk around surveying the scene and warm up for two hours of heavy yard work, hand weeding, raking and wheelbarrowing, smooth, musty, slightly bad draw, mostly some burnt charcoal and sweet old...

Perdomo Fresh Rolled Torpedo. Back when . . .

I was a regular attendee at Cigar Aficionado magazine's NYC Big Smoke event, held twice a year in May and November, one of the highlights was watching the cigar rollers at Nick Perdomo's table. He and his father are the manufacturers of some of the world's more famous and approved non-Cuban...

    Vegas De Guayaquil. . . .

Okay, so it's not a big name cigar, just another one of those boring stories about a cigar that's been sitting in Desk Top II forever and a day, a cigar that someone sent me as a gift, BUT . . . it was a beautiful sunny spring mid-60's day, the birds chirping, a bright blue sky, the sights...

    Carlos Torano Reserva Selecta. . . .

This was a gift from Michaelsean. I was let out of work early on Friday morning, having switched Tuesday night with Thursday night this week, and at shortly after 0700 hours in New York City yesterday, the weather was breezy and almost downright cold, belying the incredible day that was to...

Time for the renewal of . . .

my annual membership in the J.C. Newman Cigar Connoisseurs Club. Nobody GIVES you anything in life, EVERYTHING costs you SOMEthing. Well, yes and no. I've always been quite happy with the nominal fee that the J.C. Newman Cigar Co. charges for membership in their club, and this year...

The band says Flor de A. Allones, Seleccion Privada, . . .

and the size was 6 3/4 x 36. The wrapper was a nice, medium brown with a slight sheen and the afternoon cigar was smooth, with rich, sweet tasting flavors of mocha, tobacco and dried pears. A slightly tight draw, but a very smooth, pleasant, bold flavored, high class smoke all the way.
